  • When did the Flying Scotsman go thru Wilmette, IL from Chicago on the C&NW?

  • Without doing some research I would say some time in the late 60's.  It was owned by a Brit named Allan Pegler.  I know none of the details but believe he thought he could make a lot of money running it in the USA.  It finally wound up running around San Franciso from Fishermans Wharf as I recall and then he went belly up.  Not sure if it was while it was here or when he got it back to England.
  • I'm thinking the mid-60s.  I it believe went through Wishram, Wash., at that time a busy railroad town on the SP&S mainline through the Columbia Gorge.
  • I believe it landed in Boston around Oct 11, 1969 and then traveled to Houston through Atlanta, arriving November 15, 1969. Must have been on the C&NW during 1970.

  • Further to what has been (correctly) said, Flying Scotsman commenced its second year of a transcontinental tour at the beginning of summer 1970.   It had spent the winter months resting in Slaton, Texas, I believe.

It began its summer tour in Aniston, Alabama. The train and the crew of Flying Scotsman Enterprises ( fine people) then proceeded North.  The loco was a Gresley A3 Pacific in LNER apple green, with an auxiliary tender,  together with a consist of chocolate and cream British coaches, some of which had been fitted with British trade exhibits.  When the train made a stop, visitors could tour it.

I joined up with the crew in Kansas City, Mo in July 1970 one of three yanks, so to speak., riding along on the slow voyage North, stopping at towns along the way.   They did not run at night.  Following a weeklong stopover in late summer of 1970 in Chicago at the old Santa Fe station, the train then resumed its trip to its winter resting place of Green Bay, WI.  I left the train in Chicago and paced the train thereafter.

    cheers

  • I answered my own queston. I was recently looking thru an old diary, and came across the date. It was July 19, 1970. I then checked my photos, which were not very good. I had recently bought 4 mounted B&W photos of the Scotsman for comparison - they are square format, probably taken with a 2-1/4 x 2-1/4 twin lens, and very well done.
