What diesels would be considered endagered these days?

  • Any high hood GP or SD 7s or 9s.The vast majority of these units have been,or soon will be,chop nosed. These units are all around 50 years old,and won't be around forever.Any ALCos or older GE units are on short lines,or private industries. The last ALCo was built over 35 years ago.The last Baldwin was built 50 years ago.

  • GE's C40-8. Union Pacific had quite a fleet of them at one point. There's still a few out there, but not like before.
From here to there, and back again.
  • Any non-Dash-2 line second generation EMD and Dash-7 / standard nose Dash-8 GE's are headed for the endangered list on the Class Ones.
  • As Chairman of the Flying Yankee Restoration Group I would have to say the Winton engine in the 3 stainless steel 1935  streamliners....aren't they about the oldest ones around and I donot believe any of them will run again altho the Flying Yankee will with a new state of the art system not yet decided on...restoing the Winton was in the six figures and no spare parts....we gave up on her and will do a cosmetic outside restoration for display purpose as is the Zephyr's in the Chicago Museum.....Dick
  • The Flying Yankee is going to run again? Wow now that's really something! That's going to be a restoration on par with (well really exceeding) the IRM's Electroliner job, quite a bit of history there.

    Cheers and Best Of Luck!

  • About the F7's and F9's, believe it or not, at least in Canada, there are a few in revenue service, i believe RailLink has one, and the CPR has 3 units out west on the Royal Canadian Pacific FP7's. I remember in the 80's in Manitoba, they were common on CPR and CN, and VIA. Even the FPA4's were still around until 1990 and the safety changes that came with the CROR.

  • On the BNSF, they are starting to phase out SW1200s,SD-9s,GP-9s and a majority of the SD40-2s are being sold off, You can't hardly find a U30c let alone a C30-7 on the property except mabe in Alliance. Some Santa Fe GEs still exist and some of their SD45-2 fleet is still around. The GP30s and GP35 of the BN were modified at West Burlington Shop to GP39M classification and can be ween around often. Alot of the older locomotives are being sold and leased back under a different company, some are in storage.

  • Well at least on CPR the SD90MAC H's will be around for a while, heck they still run non dash SD40's on grain runs on subdivisions, and of course the GP38-2's which many have even recieved the Canadian Pacific Beaver and Shield emblem. CPR was actually the only class1 railway in the 50's that had a trio of 4-4-0 American Standards still running on branch lines. It was only in 98 that the last MLW/ALCO's were retired. and they still have plenty of SW1200rs's, and GP9's.
