GP9R Question

  • Hi all! I have a question about GP9Rs. Do they all have that vent in the side like the ones in these photos:

    Thanks!

  • The GTW GP9 was extensively rebuilt, but has the standard louver arrangement for that "phase" GP9. This unit got a new cab, like others in the GTW program, why I have no idea. It is a relatively late production GP9, as it has single 48" cooling fans at each end of the long hood. The WC/ FRVR/C&NW GP9 is also standard, and unlike the GTW unit looks pretty much like it did when it was built. The air tanks on the roof show us that it was built with a steam generator for passenger service, or an extra large fuel tank. It has the older style twin 36" fans on each end of the long hood, and the louver arrangement has not been altered too much. CN does not appear to have either unit active in 2006. The R merely shows that the units were extensively altered inside.(Rebuilt) They both got 645 power assembiles installed, new (or rebuilt) generators and, on the GTW unit, -2 electronics. Which could explain the new cab on the GTW unit. The CNW unit likely got GP18/28/30/35 electronics from retired GP30s or '35s.
  • The cabs were changed for the reason stated above, new electrical cabnets and the fact that ALOT of them were rustting out (leaky cab heaters).
Highball....Train looks good device in place!!
  • OK! Thanks for the help guys!
