Southern Pacific Daylight passenger cars

  • What is the correct type of passenger cars that went along with the Southern Pacific Daylight GS 2 and GS 4? I haven' t been able to determine if they were Madisons or some sort of streamlined. Some photos I've seen look like they may have been smooth side streamline. Most O gauge (Lionel and MTH) have only made corregated side streamline while K-Line made a Madison set.

  • The original Daylight cars and all successors (including the TNO Sunbeam) except the Shasta Daylight were fluted stainless steel from Pullman-Standard, painted red, orange and black with silver-gray trim and lettering. There were variations among the trainsets (for example the 1941 Daylight cars had small loading doors in the sides for baggage and supplies). As the number of trains expanded and new equipment got ordered, the older equipment got mixed up, so the smooth side Shasta wound up with a fluted obs. As the SP discovered the car structures were corroding away due to the leaky original construction (a problem with all corrugated cars except Budd's), they began replacing the side structures with stainless steel sheet, painted in the later red/silver Sunset scheme. The 1937 Sunbeam cars were converted to this scheme (with the corrugated siding still in place) beginning in the late 1940's. The unique 3/4 domes were converted from Sunbeam and Daylight equipment.
