What is YOUR favorite locomotive manufacturer?

  • [:D]Sure MLW are Alco units made in Canada but they did produce some unique diesels such as RS10, RS18, FP4-A and B, M420 and M636. And the sounds of those engines are hard to beat

  • Tough choice, yep, people will be fighting over this one. I expected EMD to be on top, and of course, as always, it was. My favorite EMD attribute has to be the sound of an idling 16-645E3 unit on a SD40-2 on a hot summer night - or better yet, two SD40-2s!

    I remember reading about C636s - you'd idle it for 15-20 minutes and then yank open the throttle to run 6 or 7 and look in your mirror, and it'd look like a bomber had come in to blow up your train and managed to get the bomb to go right down the exhaust manifold before it exploded - of course, this wasn't good for the engine, but the C636 was never mechanically perfect. Small wonder Alco sold only about 35 units!

Fairbanks Morse (yes the builder of the Trainmaster) has the rights to manufacturer ALCo 251s for stationary and marine applications.     ALCO 251powered locomotives are still being built under license in India. 251-powered locomotives are the dominant power on Indian Railways. Most of them on the broad-gauge lines are classified as WDM2 and look like RS18's on C-C trucks.
    There are also meter-gauge ALCO's classified are YDM4 which resemble high-nose versions of White Pass & Yukon DL535's.
    The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

  • I would say EMD because they run better than other builders ALCO too ugly and GE make me Grumpy because they are the noiset Locomotives ever

    S-12s, S-8s, AS-16s, and of course RF-16 Sharks are my favorite Baldwin diesels.
    I like Baldwin mainly due to the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines use of Baldwins, the many locomotives they built for the PRR, and the stories I've heard about Baldwin diesels being able to pull long, heavy trains, trains that other builders locomotives could not pull.
    Baldwins biggest problem was that they could not m. u. with any other make of diesel locomotive due to their air actuated throttles.
