so for all we know, many could have already been bidded on. just seeing these machines live to see more operation is good enough for me. no matter what color they are. mainl because i know UP wont buy them :P

Wisconsin Northern should get one. or the Maine Montreal etc road that the former pres. of WC now works for. that a treat that would be for him to get his old SD45s back.

and as for my pipe dream:

I doubt if the Wisconsin Northern could afford the fuel costs on an SD45, much less the track structure to hold one of those beasts.
Maine Montreal and Atlantic--uses a fleet of GE's. Ed Burkhardt(ex-Pres of WC, and Pres. of MM&A) started a company called Rail World to run operations in New Zealand and England. Rail World did purchase WC SD45's but only for the prime movers, which were sent overseas. The carcasses were scrapped.

My question to all of you is--If you had the means(money) to acquire a SD45, where would you keep it? You'd have to lease space at a local railyard, or get the local RR to lease your engine for service(not likely, considering age/maintenance issues/fuel costs.)

Nice idea, but way too impractical. As far as museums, the one in St. Louis has an ex- EL 45, in addition to the one in Duluth(GN) and several out west(SP).

The scrap price for a SD45 would probably limit any donation, unless it's a celebrity ("Hustle Muscle", or the first(SP) SD45). JMO[8D]

that's why i dont intend to buy one. not something you can keep in your backyard. that's why i hope a museum or another railroad buys them. becuase they CAN use them

Not neccesarily. Our museum may be aquiring a WC one and repainting is NP. Its all specualtion.....but.....
It woulnt be like we would run it everyday. Few times a motnh, if that.

Maitnence costs...for the initial startup yes...but we can roll on our own from there most of the way as long as we dont run it till it drops.

Jim, the Hustle Muscle is NOT in Duluth. The NSSR operated it up until 1998 or 1999 (ask Kale) then it was sent back to the Great Northern Railway Historical Society's home base in Minneapolis.At the Jackson St. Roundhouse.

Not really. Its just that they are in a buisness. They are auctioning them all off, but what you get is not an SD45 at all. Its a shell of one. No wipers,some traction motors, batteries, control stand items, doors, chairs,headlights, numberboards, grabirons, ditchlights, sand cap, and many other items have all been removed.
What I would do is buy the old GN (or NP?) or docks in Superior for $100,000 plus, then sell it for scrap for $500,000+ or so (Kale can give you the exact figures) and there you go. Same goes for an SD45.

There is a huge difference between a car lease and railroad equipment leases. Railroads are required by Fed. Reg. to paint the name, reporting marks and they can apply hearalds as well. There lease agreements allow them to apply company colors if they are leased for an any extended amount of time. All railcars that are not bought outright are leased, painted in RR's colors and the roads reporting marks are applied. The FEC has some SD40-2's on lease from UP that they painted over all UP marks and applied there own numbers, hearalds and name. There was no time for a whole paint job. If your DMIR SD38 were were there on a long term lease you could paint it whatever color you wanted. Short term usually stay in leasers colors. There are always exceptions. [2c]
