WC's SD45 fleet sent to the scrapper

  • Hahaha, guys, you took him all wrong. The 6620, WC SD45, was his "friend". He got his high school grad. shots on it. HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

  • Alec, do you know what the price is on the SD45's they tried selling. I know a shortline that is always looking for diesels.

    Most short lines don't need 3,600 hp plus the extra 4 cyclinders adds alot of maitenence costs............A gentalman I know named Dan Bought a GP35 for 20,000 and its # was WC2555, I belive that it was ex. SOO LINE any whay he sold it a year or two ago, but He said at the oction he was at the big 645's were going for 50,000 whitch we think is expensive but a SD70ACe is about 2 million so I guess its a bargin. plus thw SD45 is not a very desirable engine every one whants SD40s.......so I think the Sd45 price has raised to well over 100,000 dollers ..............remember this was a large auction with loco's from all across the CN system and it was years ago so the prices have changed since then
  • I recall them being around the area of 30,000. And all i know is that some railroaders said that they were too high.

    THATS CHEAP IN THE LOCOMOTIVE MARKET the museam I wok at bought our MW5 for 40,000 and I didn't even run........The Wisconsin Great Northern bought their SW1 for 20,000
  • Well, the RR that I am talking about is always in the market for diesels to add to the fleet.. Click on the link in my sig, titled The New Hope Railroad.

    They have 2 C30-7's in operation, as well as another C30-7 that they are restoring. The also have a GP30 that is operating, along with their only steamer in operation, a 2-8-0, and I believe they are restoring a Mikado right now. I heard rumors that they were looking for another engine with high horsepower ratings for their freight services.

  • whoa. what a misunderstanding. yes i got my senior pictures taken on WC 6620. illegally to, i'm afraid. there wasnt anyone around to ask permission, so i just went and got it done. after that day, i pretty much gravitated to that locomotive and kept doing what i could to keep track of where it was. cmon, it's not like i'm the only railfan who has a fondness for a specific locomotive. but no, CN didnt kill any of my real friends. just sent my "buddy" to the scrapper for steel money. tch, as if they even NEEDED it. they aren't UP. i dont see any debt problems with them. i think it's always more beneficial to have more units on the road too. scrapping SD45s doesnt help that... stupid CN... i hate them more than i hate UP now. at least UP didnt scrap the CNW units i loved. even if i cant tell which UP units used to be CNW

    and still, i loved that locomotive like a friend anyway. [V][:(]

  • i'll pass on that. i dont want to get married. i didnt say i loved 6620 more than my friends either... i'm just sad to see it die

    besides, i dont need a girlfriend hindering the freedom of my life....

  • 1.. some locomotives are more popular to railfans than others.. this does not mean that they should be of an higher value to railroad operators.. thay want reliability and performance not a locomotive that is powerfull but may fail

    2... when there was a downturn in the industry locomotives were given away.. steel mills were closing so not even the scrap was of value.. now railroads want locomotives the older locos have gone up in price.. however it is a lot easier to order new locomotives and lease them than to buy a locomotive just because it is popular

    3.. share holders own the railroads.. they want to see a return on their investment not see items of value sitting around and requiring expensive maint and inspections when reqd

    4.. 3,600hp is 3,600hp and it does not matter what age the engine is..however.. as with modern motor cars a new chev gto may have the same hp as a 40 year old chev.. but only use 1/2 or 1/3 the fuel... same with the sd45,s.. when the sd45,s first came out an experiment with the motors took them up to 4,320 hp .. the engines were found to be too highly stressed so the experriment was never followed thru with... the aim was to put 2 x sd45 motors into the new 8 x axle locomotives and get 8,500 to equal the old gas turbines without the problems of the gas turbines

    5.. why not start a group to preserve your favourite locomotive.. if i was the owner of the sd45 that was your favourite and you informed me that you had hundreds of members and you were fund raising then i would save the loco for you.. perhaps put it into service and keep the fan club informed of its status... 40 years ago in the uk fans preserved hundreds of locomotives just by asking the owner of barry scrap yard.. dont wait hurry.. the world (china ) cannot get enough scrap...peter

    What you don't understand is that the railroads don't sell what you see.........And what I mean is that a loco you may bid for at a oction isn't the one you get. The railroads are cheep A**es and always will be befor CN turned over the Wc2555 to my freind the stripped the following:
    2 head light housings
    3 seats
    I throttle handel
    ! power assembly
    2 air brake hoses (taken after it was put on the propperty
    1K3La air horn
    ! cab door
    And ruined all the Wc decals and paint after the aution with pain thinner, runiing a 2 year old paint job
    O ya 4 number boards
    Numerous cab lights
    numberboard lights
    And finnally the cooler that was in the cab for the crew

    Can a large R.R. like CN really need that sh** Even if ya save it ya have allot of work afterward.

    Another example is the Museam I work for ......Bn wanted to give us 2 SD45's with NO TRUCKS how are we supposed get trucks that are in operable condition.......are ceep........And lastly put the trucks under them when they were two states away


    Better to wait untill they don't stripp them for parts to use on the other ones and then save the locos.[;)]

    This may sound blunt, but In my opinion, they were just locomotives. Disposable appliances with a definite lifespan. Sure, rebuilding could save them, but it may not be economically feasible. One SD45 could be preserved, but it would take a lot of money to do so............

  • all i want is one to remain. at least one. plenty of people or groups would probably love to put money forward to preserve it. i just dont think CN will let that happen. i understand that the pretty locomotive doesnt mean anything when it doesnt perform very well. you dont see me begging amtrak to preserve the F40s, do you? i'm sure it's the same with CN and the WC SD45s. thing is i would love it if Green Bay would take one and display it in their railroad museum. it IS history after all.

    and if i was riding a train from one state to another, i'd rather ride in a widenose cab instead of standard cab. at least in winter. i hear the standard cabs got pretty cold and the widenoses were heated. oh well. technology.

    but i'm still gonna greatly miss WC 6620
