HO Scale Engine Building Kits

Can anyone help me out? My son is looking to build an HO scale engine from scratch for his electronics class, I have searched high and low and have no idea where I can find a good kit for him to build. He has already picked out the shell of the engine he would like to use, so we are really only looking for the basic electric parts for the chassis, trucks, wiring, etc, etc...I realize this is a hard thing to find, does anyone know where a guy can find a kit that has all the components UNASSEMBLED? Please feel free to tell me whatever might be helpful. Thank you

Diesels in kit form, since you're looking for a drive unit kit, try Hobbytown of Boston (now, ironically, in New Jersey) currently owned and made by Bear Locomotive:

Smile, it makes people wonder what you're up to. Chief of Sanitation; Clowntown

Steam - Bowser
Diesel - Bear
There are no others that I know of. Neither are cheap and take some tinkering. Both are excellent runners when done. In either case start from the trucks or wheels and stop at the first sign of a bind and fix it. Then proceed to the next step.
