The trusty old SD-40-2 would get my vote. I think the GE 4400 is next in line but if you really want to know, if its a train, from and old S2 swither to the most modern, I like it.

With all the F-unit, GP30, F45, and ALCO chatter, I guess I need to define modern next time. [:D]

I wish I could list every diesel locomotive ever made so we can crown a true champion. Maybe in March we can have a braket just like the NCAA men's basketball tournament. It'll be our own March Madness. Each day we could have a two locomotives going head-to-head in voting, with the winner moving on to the next round. With a bracket of 64 (like the NCAA tourney), we'd have 32 days of voting. We could do only a 32-locomotive bracket, but we'd have to leave out some beloved odd-ball locomotives (CF7, BL20-2, etc.) that might very well pull an upset. What do you think?

I love the idea of a railroad March Madness. This could be interesting ;-) I know a few people have mentioned the SD80/90MAC as their favorite. But then they also mentioned reliability issues. I heard UP had some problems with their 90's being too powerful at first, but I think Conrail was getting along fine with the 80's. Maybe 6000 horses is too much. Everything is settling into the 4000-5000 hp range. Too bad Big Blue wasn't around longer, or else we would have seen what EMD could turn out with the SD80MAC's.
