I DON'T THINK ANY MODERN DIESEL ENGINE WILL TAKE THE PLACE OF A FRESHLY WASHED EMD E8 OR E9. I GREW UP WITH THE PERE MARQUETTE, NYC, AND B & O. WLC, ORTONVILLE,MI.

I like the Dash 8-40C. I am really not too fond of the wide cab.

I voted for the Dash 9-44CW in the survey for modern diesel, but my favorite diesels were Santa Fe's Dash 9 40Bs (7410 class). If there was a poll for historic locomotives, my vote would go to Santa Fe's ALCO PA's, which wore the warbonnet the best. [:D]
Santa Fe..gone but NEVER forgotten [8D]
All the Way!

I voted for the AC4400CW, but my locomotive favorites include:
EMD SW1000, SW1500, MP15 series, E and F series, GP7, 8, 9, 10, 11,15, 18, 20, etc, SD7,9, especially SD40-2, SD40T-2, SD45, SD45T-2 series, and other EMD locomotives after that.
GE B39-8E, B40-8, B40-8W, C40-8, C40-8W, C41-8W and other GE production locomotives after these.
Every ALCO, MLW locomotive in the RS,and Century series.
"There is nothing in life that compares with running a locomotive at 80-plus mph with the windows open, the traction motors screaming, the air horns fighting the rush of incoming air to make any sound at all, automobiles on adjacent highways trying and failing to catch up with you, and the unmistakable presence of raw power. You ride with fear in the pit of your stomach knowing you do not really have control of this beast." - D.C. Battle [Trains 10/2002 issue, p74.]

You gotta' admit, The Big Mac is an awesome locomotive. Almost reminds me of another EMD specialty, Union Pacific's DDA40X Centennial. I've always been partial to EMD, although GE's AC6600 has a lot of class. Thanks for letting me reply

My favorite is the old style SD70 with the standard cab and no flares. My private nicknames for them are "slabs" or "semi's" due to the unbroken wall of the long hood. I
