Train watching in Springfield, MO.

    I have to go to Springfield, MO for company business in August. I'm taking my video camera and hope to have time to do some train watching. Can anyone tell me some good locations in Springfield to do this? Thanks for your help.

    Hello pbrankle,

    My wife is from Springfield, MO. The old Frisco shops are still in use by BNSF. If you are coming in from highway 13/7, just keep going straight until you go over the bridge that is over the yards. You can turn either left or right at the stoplight on the other side of the bridge.

    I just now saw this thread. I know it is to late for pbrankle but maybe someone else might see this and it help them. The Frisco used Baldwin 4 8 4 s during the steam days. One of them is at Grant Beach Park, on Grant Street. This is farely close to the old downtown area and also close to the yard area behind Commercial Street. During the steam engine days the yard area behind Commercial Street was a lot bigger than it is now. The Frisco CTC building is just beyond the intersection of Boonville and Commercial Streets. This used to house the Frisco Railroad Museum, now I am not sure what is going on with the Museum. I think it was moved elsewhere. I know Ozark Mountain Railcar purchased several pieces of rolling stock.

    Should you be going to Springfield, Missouri, you will want to see and take pictures of the 4524 at Grant Beach Park. There are some other pieces of rolling stock there also, including a put-put car (just for you trainnut484). [:D]

    Since some of you are in the Springfield, MO. area (or are familiar with that area) maybe you can answer this question. I've lived in Rolla, MO. off & on for most of my 55 years so remember seeing a lot of Frisco passenger trains in the "good old days."
    I have recently been spending time on the Frisco side of eBay (I find that if you enter "Frisco" & not just "Frisco Railroad" you find more Frisco Railroad things.) One thing that bothers me is that there are usually some Frisco passenger car sets listed and these usually include a vista domeliner. I don't recall ever seeing a domeliner going thru Rolla. Did Frisco ever operate a train with a domeliner? If so, from where to where? Thanks

    I grew up on the mainline between Springfield, and K.C. . I was VERY little during the last days of Frisco passenger service. I can say I never saw a Frisco dome car. That doesn't mean they didn't have any, I just never saw one if they did. Try to get a car number or name that might be helpful in researching this question. I did look in a couple of my Frisco books but didn't see any there. Was it a streamlined car or heavyweight?

    KANSAS AVE EXPR Is A good spot also the jefferson ave foot bridge is better
    because theres no roads you can see every thing from there also the south side of town has some old yards from the SLSF (FRISCO) days the foot brige spans over the tracks it also has a historical marker not to mention the three old frisco cabs just east at the Frisco rwy mueseum the south side yds are mainly just switch jobs but you might see somethimg you like also go buy the springfield police dept central prec
    and in the lobby you might see Bonny Parker & Clyde Barrows old guns they used and died with its really cool commercial st is mainly bars & bums but the trains run day
    & night NW to K.C.M.O. NE to ST Louis MO SW to TULSA & OKC SE to Memphis Tenn
    & Birmingham ALA.
