If you had a railroad......?

  • First off ,this is only ment for fun. This is something for creative people, just read the quetions and answer them if you would like.

What would be the your ideal railroad, If you could start a railroad. You totally control all aspects of your railroad, and come on now, be creative. At any time period and, money dosen't matter.

    >What time period would it be in?
    >What region of the country would it be in?
    >What would you name it?
    >What kind of locomotives would you use?
    >Is there a certain paint scheme that you would like?
    >Would you be conservitive, in the way you do business, or operate?
    >What kind of frieght would you haul?

    >If you wanted ,what prototypical railroads would you purchase?
(ex) for example, purchasing the Burlington Northern, to get access the northwest. or Something like that.

    > If you want to add more things about your ideal railroad, go ahead.

Hope to here from some people.

  • Time period: Everyone has a time period they think of as a "golden age". For me, I'd pick between WWI & WWII.
Region: Northeast. Say, the Official Classification Territory. Not the really built up area, like the PRR's Northeast Corridor, though. A mix of heavy traffic lines and some branches.
Name: I don't know; it would be related to the geography, though-no "CSX" here!
Power: Electrics on the high density, steam elsewhere; with a few gas/diesel electrics scattered around.
Paint: A good ol', conservative Pullman green.
Style of Operation: Some fast, luxury premium passenger trains and a lot of reasonably up to date secondary trains. Freight would be mostly merchandise, not a lot of minerals or agricultural products.

Other roads: This is interesting. While I've never been an especial follower of it, I think I've recreated the New Haven! I guess I'd extend the electrification to Boston (and all the suburban services) and finish JP Morgan's plan of buying up everything in New England (B&M, MEC and B&A). Maybe a bigger slice of Grand Central or Penn Station. If I felt in an empire building mood, I might snap up the L&NE or L&HR and add either the LV or DL&W to extend to Buffalo.
"Look at those high cars roll-finest sight in the world."
  • Well, If I could choose a railroad in any era? New England after WWII! First i'd have tried like[censored] to keep Pat McGinnis' filthy hands off New Haven! I would not have tried to scrap the electrification. The EP5s would have worn NH Hunter Green, as would new RS11s,PA3s (custom order 2400 hp PAs to relieve the oldest DL 109s) and I would have used the FCD railbusses, instead of letting them sit in the shop at Readville. I would have kept Van Nest shop open, being fairly certain I could threaten New York with all sorts of service cuts and fare increases, unless they gave NH a break on taxes. (yeah, like I would have succeeded at that!) Failing at that, I'd have built a much larger shop facility in New Haven than Lamberton St., which is still too small! I would also have bought more EP5s (EP5as?) and kept the EP3s,and EP4s going well into the 70s for Metro North or Amtrak, as well as the EF3s! (why didn't the passenger equipped EF3s get the EFP1 class? I'm curious about that one.)
  • Wow! [:D][:D][:D]

You guys said it all - wanna be business partners?[:D]

About the steam genny equipped EF-3 - they were classed EF-3a - since they were still EF-3's, a simple 'a' amendment for a subclass was all that was needed rather than making a new class of 'lectrics. EP-2's, EP-3's, and even EP-5's found themselves on freights on night runs and in their later years.

  • if i had a railroad i would dress like a pimp and smoke big cigars, and i would have lots of adventures.
  • I have actually thought about this one. My railroad would be set in modern times, and would be a railfan paaradise. Why? Becasue I would operate in the remote pacific northwest, with lots of grades and manned helpers. My fleet would consist of old EMDs such as F45s, SD45s, SD35s, SD40, SD7s, SD9s, highhoods, lowhoods, whatever. I would be cheap about it. I would not paint any of my locmotives, just leave them in the paint of the railroad I bought them from....just a little patch will do. To make extra money, I would operate hepler serviece for major class 1s. BAscily, mine would be a lot like the Montana Rail LInk, except no ACes and no paint sheme. I have not thought of a name yet, but his would be fun to railfan!
  • The railroad in my mind is a present day road. But the world around it is stuck in the '50s.
It starts in an unlikely place (Lodgepole NE), and ends in an unlikely place (Abbotsford BC).
Its early name is "The Lodgpole, Kootenay & Pacific." Its merger name is "Overland Northern."
Locomotives used are Eries, RSs, U33Cs, DASH-9s, ACes.
    Paint scheme? Ummmm, yes.
Products hauled: Grain, wood products, some intermodal.

And yes, I too would dress like a pimp.

    GP40's,SD40's,GP38-2s,3 SD50's, and 3 SW1500's
    Operated in Mississippi
Hauled aggregate, and pulpwood, with frieght ofcourse.
Bought by BNSF, then BNSF sold the lines to CSX, and the line gets abandon, all engines sold to Larry's Truck & Electric

ATC , formerly ADM " Ames Transportation Corp. , nee Ames & Des Moines RR"
    Main Motive Power:
    1 GP 9, 3 GP35's,3 GP40-2L's,1 SD35,2 SD45's, 16 8-40-3C's ( Made up GE based engine by Electro Motive Canada )
    Operated in Iowa
    Hauled Cement,Corn,Frieght,Coal.
Lol, this one is still currently operating.

DM&P " Duluth Minneapolis & Pacific ( DWP based paintscheme and logo )
    Main Motive Power:
    4 GP38-2's,1 GP40,1 GP40-2, 3 SD40's,6 SD40-2's,4 SD40-3's, 2 GP9u's
    Operates In Minnesota, and Iowa.
    Sister road to the ATC
    Hauls Frieght, and taconite.
    Currently running

    ICL "Iowa Central Limited"
    Main Motive Power:
    6 GP 9's (all scrapped), 11 SD38-2's (4 Sold),1 SD39 (Scrapped),2 SD40-2's,3 GP40's(stored),2 GP38-2's, 1 SD45-2 (sold).
    Operates in Iowa and Illinios.
Hauls Grain,Intermodal,Frieght,Ore ( from DMIR,carried to Chicago by UP )
Bought by CN ( which is why some engines were scrapped )

Now that i bored you all half to death, here is a railroad you will be able to look at.

AS " Alec & Southern" (Name by my Uncle, CP Dispatcher)
    Motive Power:
    2 GP38-2s (GP40X shell), 10 GP40's, 4 GP39-2's, 23 SD40-3's, 32 SD40-2's, 9 SD70ACe's (may return to GM), 6 SD70M (Notch Nose)

  • If i owned a railroad. The time period would when CR was born. The east coast. Conrail. The engines would be from SW-100 to evolution. Paint blue. Yes. Freight would be: ML ,TV , container, grain, salt or anything else that can go in covered hopper, ore, coal, coke, steel, corn produces, auto parts, trash & pipes or anything else that can go on a flat car. Run 24hr/6days
