Trackside with Erik and Mike, Vol. 46: January 30, 2006

  • I liked the location of Mike's photobetter, but the image looks as though it would greatly benefit from a polarizer. And the wide-angle distortion of the lead unit was a distraction.

Erik's photo had more 'punch'. The house on the left side of the image almost turned me off of the image, but the green signal on the far right made up for it; the house and signal sort of framed the train.

    Voted for Erik's.

  • Two very good photos, almost identical shots. The snow flying indicates the speed of
the train in Erik's photo, so Erik get my vote this week. Thanks again to both of you and keep up the good work. Always enjoy your photos and look forward each week to
see what you will be offering. Thanka again.
  • I am not a "professional" when it comes to photography, so must just vote for the photo that appeales to me the most. Both of you always give us very good photos to
vote on and this week Erik gets my vote. Keep up the good work, I am sure we all
enjoy what you offer us. Thanks and looking forward for the next installment.
  • I didn't intend to vote twice. After my first vote I got a notice indicating my vote didn't
register so a few moments later I voted again and when I got back to the messages I found both if my votes. Sorry, just an error by someone new to computers. Whoever
tallies the voted just cancel one of my "Erik" votes.
  • Voted for Eric. Enjoyed the shot, as others have said cold and the snow dusting up like that. Being a CN fan helps.

Ouch! For me it was difficult to decide, because in some aspects the two pics are almost identical - perspective, kicking up snow, curve, coldness...

But then Eric got my vote, because the trailing cloud of swirling snow is just a bit more dramatic than in Mikes shot.

It is said that, "The longer two people spend time together, the more they become alike." Judging by the entries for this "Trackside", I would think that this would be the case. It would seem that you guys are borrowing pages out of each others "photo composition" notebooks. [:0]
RailRon is correct in his assessment that the photos are almost identical (chance happening, I think not) [;)]
So how to vote? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder so all things being equal, Eric gets my vote. The shot of the snow being kicked up adds the drama to the pic, that Mike's shot lacks. As always both are nice shots, but IMHO, Eric's has that dash of panache that make it the winner for me. [:D]
  • It is all a matter of contrast. The red nose and black CN locos against the white snow is "sharper" than the yellow bulbous nose of the UP units against the snow. Mike's Amtrack shot might have made the voting closer to even. I envy neither of you the cold of Wisconsin winter to bring us your offerings. Looking for Mike's next "grab" shot!

  • Photos quite good between the two, however the Trackside with Erik and Mike should also include a statement that says," this is an advertisement, and the images shown are for demonstrating purposes only and not really a true railfan article." Why? When the article is showing off a new camera model followed by the manufactures spec's, well it becomes an advertisement.

ps you guys could po Canon by switching to say Nikon D200's ?
  • Hmm I went for the underdog this time i guess ... Mike ... nice scene.
"There is nothing in life that compares with running a locomotive at 80-plus mph with the windows open, the traction motors screaming, the air horns fighting the rush of incoming air to make any sound at all, automobiles on adjacent highways trying and failing to catch up with you, and the unmistakable presence of raw power. You ride with fear in the pit of your stomach knowing you do not really have control of this beast." - D.C. Battle [Trains 10/2002 issue, p74.]
  • They were both Great photos!! But I'm bot a fan of the U.P. since they thought that they needed more money on charging the model companies for royalities on their trademark!! Long Live the Santa Fe & Wabash!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I like Mikes because it close up and the snow.
  • The 28mm gives the loco in Mikes photo the same look as one of those "big nose" dog pictures. The locomotive looks distorted with an exceptionally large nose.

The green signal light in the snowy haze flying up around the train is a nice touch in Erik's photo.
