Champion Trains

  • During the 50's I travelled to South Carolina on what was known as "The Champ" which travelled out of Penn Station in NYC. Does anyone know where I can find a photo of this train or one similar to it? I'm trying to find info on the dining cars as well. Where they desegregated by the 50's? A photo of a car in the 50's would be great. Any help directing me to proper research sources would be greatly appreciated.

  • The trains were the CHAMPIONS of the Atlantic Coast Line. In the fifties their was two a West Coast Champion and an East Coast Champion. The West Coast Champion operated New York to Tampa/St. Petersburg and the East Coast Champion operated New York to Miami. I believe TLC books has an ACL book out that shows pictures of the Champions in the fifties.
As to your other question the Dining cars were still segregated throughout the fifties on most trains that operated south of the Mason-Dixon Line.
