Trackside with Erik and Mike, Vol. 2005: Second Chance Shootout

  • Eric's photo of the BNSF #4747
  • The lengthy description by Erik does not take into account anyone can do a pacing shot. I once rode in one of the many Harley Anniversary rides. While driving and on the open road I took out my camera held it above my shoulder pointed it rearward, held my breath and snapped. The photo was perfectly centered with a long procession of motorcyles trailing me... no cropping..etc. Finding that meet and building the composition takes effort, not just luck. Mikes photo gets my votoe.
  • This was a really tough decision. Both are terrific pics. I finally went with Erik's, as his gives more of the action feel due to the speed blur.
  • They both look good!! [:D]

Time to put an end to this feature, or enlist two other photographers and get a new perspective on things.

Aside from the occassional interesting photo, most are mundane. I expect to see better photography with the Trains Magazine name on it.

I also understand this nothing more than an infomercial to showcase the Canon digital
camera line, because of that I assume nothing will change.

    Let the mediocrity continue.

Wow that is harsh! I think that this is a great feature. It is two guys (read Amature Photograhers) going out and doing something they enjoy...... taking photos of trains. Keep up the great work Erik & Mike I personally enjoy the feature. Oh by the way I voted for Mike's photo.
Whoever said you cannot buy happiness forgot about puppies!

If you don't like the photos then go somewhere else and stop taking pot shots at an extremely good feature of this web site. And this is not a infomercial for Cannon cameras, the truth is that Canon makes the best digital cameras and that is what good photographers (like Erik and Mike) will use. If I had the money I would have a Canon digital camera too.

Oh and by the way I voted for Mike.
Yes we call it the Dinky. Why? Well cause it's dinky! Proud to be the official train geek of Princeton University!
  • My My, some people seem to be upset! I would think that if you didn't like the format or whatever, one could simply not use this forum. I'm sure many people have various reasons why they like one photo over another. That's your right. But to start getting nasty is totally un-called for.
Erik & Mike.....Keep up the good work. Thank you for sharing your photos with us. It really doesn't make any difference what anyone else thinks as long as you like them.
After all, this is a "fun" forum, isn't it???

Diverging from the main article... I would like to thank Richard for an immense amount of email time to help me obtain csx photos ... I am constantly amazed with the 100% effort that people from the hobby gice to new comers like myself ... This hobby is able to span international borders and cultures without any hesitations.. Thanks to all who continue to make this an enjoyable experience plus the many cyber friends I now have Pete Bundaberg Qld. Australia
  • Here's the dibs; with all due respect to Mike, I feel Eric's photo IS a more difficult to achieve so clearly; also one can make out the key element behind all that metal muscle = the Engineer!! Bravo on a most righteous 'knock'!
  • i didn't really care for either shot but chose the lesser of the two (evils) me thinks neither shot really deserves a second chance. if you don't have a good shot don't use it.
  • Validate my vote for Mike the first time volume 32 and its still Mike. [2c][^]

Happy Holidays & Happy New Year
  • I voted for Erik's entry. Clarity and action. The unit's double number is a plus. It is shots like this that I try to capture myself when trackside.
  • Is the Erik and Mike shootout, Vol 2005 a subliminal Canon advertisement?
I think it is, after all those two are having fun with Canon new EOS digital camera, all the features being mentioned, yep it is an advertisement to me!!
