TEEN RAILFAN PLACE-LET'S TALK TRAINS! Thread Locked

  • hey Guys I am back (BMTRAINS)
more people know me as Guilford so Hi

    Alex

  • Matt - those are some awesome photos! I have yet to photograph a CP locomotive. I would like to catch one on the monthly grain train that comes through Ohio with CP power.

I am hoping to get a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7S camera. It looks like it could do quite a remarkable job considering it has 6.1 megapixels, 12x optical zoom, 4 or 6x digital zoom. And to top it off (getting fancy here), you can get it in two colors. Either silver or black.

The ultimate camera though seems to be the Canon Digital Rebel XT. My friend on rrpicturearchives, Michael Rujak, has one, and it seems to be working quite well to him. Does anybody else on here have a Canon Digital Rebel?

Anyways, that's about all I have to say!

  • Rich - Believe me, you're missing a LOT by not seeing CP! Remember, time has proven that nothing beats a red engine. Tongue [:P] If I wanted to be stupid, and if polls were still up, I'd probabl make one saying "What is your favorite colour engine red blue yellow etc..."
Canon digital rebel XT - It's definitely the one I want, at least. Of course, if I ever get a digital camera, or even another film camera, it'll have to be an SLR....that drives the price up, eh? Well, I think I'll do a little railfanning now, despite the heat...

  • James, you've got the start of a really nice website there. I had a freewebs site myself for a while, and they are nice, although the thing I didn't like was the limitation to only 7 pages back when I was running the site, and something like only 50mb of storage. That's why I kind of abondoned that site, although I'm attempting to learn HTML code and get a from-scratch website up and running on another host. You're site should be pretty cool though when it's all done, if what you've got so far is any indication of the future.

  • Hey guys! Yesterday was great! I picked up $630 worth of LGB G scale track for free! It will make a great addition to my garden railroad.

  • trainboy- were any of those shots taken with your new 500mm lens? if so I was proved wrong, the quailty of those shots is pretty decent. Good buy (assuming you used the lens in question).
  • No, those shots were before I ordered the lens. The most telephoto I have there is 200mm. And don't worry, I'm absolutely sure you were right about the quality....
Yesterday I went on a bike ride to the CN yard on the east side of town, and got turned around quite a few times before I actually got there. I ended up visiting pretty much all of Calgary's important rail yards, and I didn't even take the 15 pictures needed to finish off the roll.....the CN yard was totaly overrated (Or maybe it wasn't rated at all, and it was all in my head) only a few tracks, two GMD-1s (Which is what I went to see, but they were backlit and it was overcast) I did wind up at Ogden Shops, though. (Evan, now I know how you feel about Olewin...quite a few of the buildings have been abandoned since 1999, when cutbacks began) And Richard, you might like this: The shops are now owned by Alstom. Unfortunately, they wouldn't let me in, since most of the shop forces were on vacation. Through that fence I saw...
    H16-44 (Faded action red)
H16-66 (Fake 7000 series tuscan red and gray paint, CP never owned any H16-66s)
CPA16-4 (Tuscan red and gray, block lettering)
DRS4-4-1000 (The early CP paint scheme, lighter red and a yellow stirpe with a smile on the nose)
SD40 (I already got a shot of one at Alyth, though. 556x)
    C-424
    CEFX SD45 (Blue)
And countless other wonderful, wonderful things....I also caught two GG20Bs, CP 1700 and 1701 at the south end of Alyth. On top of all this, I biked nearly 100km.....as you can guess, I am WASTED.

That's nothin, give it another 10 years or so. I was amazed at how good the Oelwein shops looked in '99, as compared to now. CNW closed them in '93 altho UP had control of CNW at the time, so...
  • my recent Altoona run was most enjoyable. i saw 10 locomotives aside from their 4 geeps. the best part:

    I TOUCHED AN SD40-2!!!!!

nobody was around it, so i quick grabbed hold of this one handhold thingy on the front "snowplow" near the coupling. wasnt much but i still touched it. i almost wish i went back there later that day when even less crewmembers were at the yard. i would have climbed up on the porch.

i shall remember the number "UP 3017" for a loooong time. i'm feeling a bond i havent fealt since...

    ...WC 6620. Sad [:(]Disapprove [V]

just not as strong because SD45s in maroon and gold look the best. but i hope i see UP 3017 again soon.

yeah... just wait. UP will be sending their SD40-2s to the scrapper now because i grew obsessed with one.

    Your friendly neighborhood CNW fan.

  • I remember one time when I was photographing the UP Grand Junction, CO Yard (about a year after the merge) I was worried we would get in trouble when my uncle just stormed right into the yard next to the engine fueling pad. Instead of getting yelled at, I was invited into the cab of SP 225 (AC44W). Not only that, they let me drive the 225 and the six AC44W attached to it across the yard to their waiting empty coal train. As if that wasn't enough, the crew gave me the break handle of 225.

I only wish I knew how to take a good photo then. But, by the time i was taking good photos I was no longer a cute little kid so I wouldn't have gotten the ride in the first place...
  • I've gotten to do a little riding in a few cabs myself. To protect the innocent all details and names are to be left out for a few more years at least, but I will say I've been in a few WSOR GP38's and SD20's while they did some switching, it's pretty neat to see all of the operations from the cab veiw. I too wish I could have taken better photos at the time that I got my rides, I don't really have much that's any good of the stuff I rode in because of it. I mean I've got plenty of outside shots, but not much of the cab.

  • I have touched a CW40-8 ex CR  I thought I was going up but I wasn't well I didn't ask. I have also been in NS 4615 and NS 7083, 7083 was going LHF pretty cool going LHF. I have also been in a CSX CW40-8 and a AC44CW but can't remember the engines, but the guy in the AC44 owes me a train ride. The ones I can remember is going in WSOR 10A but a couple of hundred people went in that one also, CP Rail 6073 and CSX 8766, I got a picture of the marker lights on 8766's nose (the marker lights were on). I also got a reverser off probaly a BNSF EMD unit and have crew packs along with 3 work orders. I could have gone in IC 100 but they were washing it, plus gone in NS Exutive coaches twice pretty neat stuff in there. Plus theres a conductor on CSX that will let me on his train because I told him about a ex MP HLMX coal car with its brakes stuck.

My freind Paul Wise has been in lots of stuff M-2,D9-40C,SD40-2, you name it he's probaly been in it but hes got a freind that works for NS, well that mainly the reason why. He's also been in one of the last WC SD45's left running but, its headed back to CN for the SD45 deadline. Plus its a P.O.C. broken crankshaft it will only run as a DIT.
