TEEN RAILFAN PLACE-LET'S TALK TRAINS! Thread Locked

  • I'm thinking there's an IANR train running a few miles from me about now.

Tomorrow is the anniversary of CGWs last day. CGW was merged into C&NW at 12:01AM July 1, 1968.

Well, I've got go-kart tires to replace .Catch y'all later.
  • Funny how most all spartan cabs had a standard of having high headlights. That proves all of, Hmmm NOTHING!!! Widecabs have mostly all been on the nose. SD9043Macs,SD75I's,AC44s, etc........ You trying to prove me wrong with that statement is just, well, crazy.

  • U boats were spartan yet they had lights in both spots. now the SD70ACE amazingly does not have this 00gly positioning. ok fine, not 00gly. think back to what i said on AIM. about me liking everything until one thing is being overtaken by something i like less and then i hate that dominant something. same applies here. spartan cabs pwn. widecabs replace them. i'm not as into widecabs as i am spartan, but the ones with headlights are more tolerable to me than the noselights. but none of this like and hate really matters to me when i'm out fanning. that's when i'dlove to see anything. i mean the geeps are great, but they get boring. like GEs

  • I may disagree with some of you but hey... this is my opinion...remember that!!

I do like the head light on the nose. I think it looks pretty cool. I don't see what is so disgusting about that. This is how some railroads prefer it and I don't have a problem with but I do see that some of you don't like it that way and thats fine also. I think it gives it some uniqueness.

  • it looks bad on EMDs. then again, EMD started looking bad when they switched to widecabs. SD60Ms SUCK! SD60 pwns them ten times and more. the DDA40X was cool though. good ol F45 cab. that's when noselights dont look so bad. but lord do i ever hate the SD60M. this video is most amusing:

  • SD60Ms? Ugly? Yes, but only the three window versions. I'll never be able to understand my double standard on the subject of that cab, since I absolutely LOVE CP's SD40-2Fs! Same cab as other late 80s EMD widenoses, but somehow I guess I get distracted from the windows. Two peice windshields on a widecab are the only way to go...
Now, the only units that I really have a problem with high-mounted headlights on are the new SD70s: Those units were NOT designed for it! As I said in my last post, potruberences are not cool looking! High numberboards and headlights on the SD70ACe and M-2 are (very obviously argably) the worst options for those locomotives...
For you guys that work on the railroad (Well, sorta, anyways) why would you want high numberboards anyways? Isn't it easier to read them lower? Or does it have something to do with reading from other trains?
Alec - Darn right CP units have the best noselights around! They wouldn't win a beauty contest, but they do scream brute force, don't they? SD70ACes scream something along the lines of "I just got my nose wrenched up with a pair of pliers and my forehead is cut! Could somebody please call a welder?"
I always liked the last version of the EMD widenose - It was almost rounded and streamlined! That is NEVER a bad thing! (Although I'm sure LordAtmo, with his strange tastes will disagree!)
Now cab lights on a SOO unit in the white and red scheme - [fonzie]Ehhhhhh![/Fonzie]
Tommy - What was your break idea again?
And lastly, later this morning (I know, it's 2am, but I don't think I'll be getting any sleep) I'm off to Jasper, won't be back until monday. Keep it clean!

  • Have fun Matt!

I've got one of my tires changed but still have one more to do. (which will go a LOT easier than the first)

today is a very sad day- The anniversary of CGWs last day. It was merged into C&NW at 12:01AM, July 1,1968. Goodbye old friend..[:(]
  • I think it's appropriate to post pics of FP7 #116A, the only engine currently in CGW colors

Notice it has the Corn Belt Route logo- it was delivered with the Lucky Strike logo, like on this hopper and caboose. so the restoration of #116A isn't 100% but at least it was saved from the torch.

  • that's one sexy locomotive. it's sad that CGW is gone and even more frustrating that it's my favorite road's fault. but now UP ate them all

  • Well guys whats up! I just found this thread this morning, looks like a cool place to hang out. Just thought I would drop by. A couple days ago I saw 2 Amtrak Cascade trains, man they are cool. I was out of town last week, and our room was close to a busy UP mainline, and inustrial switching and Amtrak. Trains every 1/2 hour! Great stuff! All kinds of variety!

  • QUOTE: Rick- CSX does not run 70-75 Amtrak will get up to 70 UPS tralier train might also.

Oskar - Yes they do go 70-75 mph up here in Berea. I have videos of them going that fast. Don't even think of arguing with me about that one when I go there literally all the time. So, I'm just saying, do not argue.

I personally like the SD70M-2 and the SD70ACe. I don't care if they are boxy or not, they are still really cool looking to me, in my humble opinion that is.

  • whoa, whoa, whoa settle down man wheres the fire?. You do railfan there but I have heard they go 45-60 MPH just estimated they or I don't have a Speed-O-Meter to detect that. If they are I am pretty glad I am going to NS to get a job heck, the faster they go the slower they break for emergancy.

Lord Atmo- The U-Boats were awsome, good for LHF for the SR and NS good thing Central of Georgia still has some of NS's in running condition. SD60's are cool locos not a big fan of the UP SD60's or BNSF ex BN but NS Standard cab SD60's alright! good horns good locos love to see them when they come around.

Well I am off tommow to Atlanta to watch my beloved Atlanta Braves take on 'Rockin Leo Mazzone' and the Baltimore Orioles but before that I'll railfan on the old L&N Main line in North GA and NS ex SR and a few other places before a 7:05 game time at The Ted.

  • Oskar - I know what you mean. Those things fly through here, yesterday I luckily held my tripod while one passerby. It nearly blew my tripod over, which has happened with one of them fast ones before like Q110 or Q164.

The U-Boats, I do not care for. CSX's U18B's look pretty crappy, I'm glad they scrapped them. CSX's C30-7's are out the door to Ohio Central. I pretty much do not like the 1970's era of the GE Conventional and Blomberg (spelling*) units.

The NS SD60's are something that I also do not care too much for. Oskar, if you like those, come to Ohio, you will see at least 10 every day. One usually in the 6550-6716 series. I do like the former Conrail SD60's though.

I especially like the NS SD70 spartan cabs though because their horns are cool, because they are loud then they get quieter and quieter until they stop. They trail-off. Especially the NS 2523. It is the coolest one I've heard.

Oskar - the CSX 5399 is around. One more and CSX is at 5400. Yesterday at Berea, I saw CSX 5394, 5396 and 5389. They all looked fairly fresh, especially the 5394 for some strange reason.

NS ran one SD70M-2 by yesterday while I was there which looked fresh but it turned out to be 2686. It was on a NS "Top Gon" coal train.

  • sadly no SD60s come through Altoona. apparently all the ex CNW nes are gone or no longer have the appropriate cab signals for the track around here. but if i see an SD60M, i wont even photograph it. the great looking locomotive defaced with the most hideous nose i have ever seen

  • well, the anniversary of the merger was 10 minutes ago. Let us say goodbye to one of the best granger roads.
