Where has Chris been, why'd he get locked out? His name doesn't appear on the members area. It is rgroeling right? I even searched under the "R" 's and nothing.

Can anyone tell me what happened? Did he give up his account or did he get locked?

Hey anybody who hasn't joined yet, please do so at my new and improved forums.

Rich - You'll want to edit that post, the link is incorrect, you used a comma in the place of the .cgi.
I also asked the same question back in March...got this response.

I have sorta cut down on forum posting so I could do more school work. I want to keep my 3.8 out of 4 grade point average! I deleted my menbership on trains.com....I was starting to dislike it....I do post here once in a while...I just dont got much to say lately. But this weekend I got some KILLER train pics, so PM so I can participate in the photo constest!

    Cheers!

Anyways, on the film vs. digital, I will continue to shoot film and listen to LPs, but I also plan to get an (expensive) digital, and use both, hopefully to great artistic effect! My K-1000 is robust and reliable, and I know exactly how to use it, and it takes great pictures. Slides, IMO, are the best form of media. Projected onto a wall, you get great detail, and the light seems to come out of the picture much better, and it works very well. This is why I have a slide projector in my room! [:p]
I thought that once you get something like a 10MP digital, that you can then take pictures that are superior in quality to film. Pixels or a blur, there's a main difference.
Speaking of film, can't be too long until my reprints come back and I can show you how a film camera really suits my MRR needs!

  • Thanks Matt, your membership on my forums should be back, although I have no idea if it is or not. What a mess!!!!!
    Never should have done it.

Anyways, I GOT MY SECOND PHOTO ON RAILPICTURES!!!!!! It's the photo in my sig.

Jdirelan- Your plan worked, my appeal must've changed there minds or something. At first they didn't take this one cuz of the ATSF's looking pink and now they did cuz I said they were faded out.

On the "film vs. digital" discussion. How do you think I made it on "that" site if digital isn't supposed to be good. In this situation, I agree with Alec. Digitals are just as good or even better than film. Plus you don't have the wait : P!!

    Catch y'all later....

  • Thanks for the compliment Tim! Thats one of the reasons i love digitals, like Richard said , you dont have to wait. You screw up a shot, you can go get another one. Worst feeling ive ever had was getting film developed and seeing that i screwed up so many shots. But, i really prefer sitting on the bedroom floor, or bed, and just going through my old shots and reminiscing, rather than sitting at a computer screen.

    Not much new here.

    Nice shot Richard.

    WC,
Those are good digital shots, I like them. What i meant by horrible was probably taking it a little to the extreme but my comment should be noted.

What I meant was that I do not like digital shots because they give off the appearance of a flat image. If you look at an image taken on film and compare it with a digital or scanned photo you will notice subtle differences. It will take some time to know what you are looking for, but you should recognize it.

Also blow your picture up 200% of it s original size, even 300%, it wont look like a picture anymore but oversized color squares. Film won't do that.

As for me, I still go traditional because of one main reason: control. I don't trust a computer chip to take my photos. It may be programmed for lighting, but it wont see what I am seeing. It may say the lens needs to be rotated 45.29996 degrees, while my mind says 45.3 degrees looks sharper.

A problem my dad and I constantly run into during wedding shoots is that the camera wont want to focus on an object closer than the object we want to. It becomes very irritating and we since then turned off the Automatic setting on our cameras. It works much better.

In the end, it s up to the photographer what he or she wants. I prefer film and will until the day I die. I accept digital cameras, but I don't like them.

Couldn't have said it better my self.....

film is just clearer and less expernsive
  • On the less expensive part......

Sure, Digital Cameras cost alot. Some are around 1000 dollars, but you can get good Ditigals for around 600-800 dollars, and some fairly good ones for less than 300 dollars. If you add up the cost of all those rolls of fim you've had to buy over the years, and then add in the price of your film camera, I'm guessing that you are already getting close to at least half the price of a good camera, and you may have already paid for the inexpensive digital. Then think about all the film you'll have to buy in the future, and you're probably already up to the cost of the expensive Digital.

John, You mentioned you shoot RAW format. What size memory card do you have in you camera? How many shots can you get in this format with it? I've got the ability to shoot RAW with my camera, but I only get nine shots for my 128 MB card, so it's usually to large to be practical for me unless I buy a bigger card. I may just look into doing that down the road though, as RAW really does seem like it's a better way to go than JPEG.

  • Ya, Noah, i was just about to pounce on Kale, but i see you beat me to it. First of all, my point and shoot does pretty well, and it only cost 200 bucks. I dont need any special lenses, or other add ons that cost money. Im sure you have paid more than 200 bucks depending on how long youve been shooting. It is indeed NOT cheaper, and it never will be, unless you just need that 10 MP camera. 5 MPs are just fine, all you need to really look for is how big the surface area is. What I mean is that the picture will be better if in raw it is something like 3200x2400. But the higher that is, the better it is. So a bigger SA or a camera, even though its still 5 MPs, is better because there is more room for detail.

In most locomotives today an engine called a two-stroke engine is used.
    OR
is a four-stroke engine used according to Rudolf Diesel

Also how come in a two-stroke engine cycle theirs only a intake valve i cannot find the exhaust valve.

In the past EMDs were 2 cycle engines however the new GM16V265 is a 4 cyclinder. GEs are 4 cyclinder and Alcos were also 4 cyclinder.

  • [bday][bday] TO ALL!!
Okay, I got eleven reprints today, and I'll post three of them here, and the other nine on railroadforums.
Two shots at night - Both are of the Banff Springs Hotel and Sulpher Mountain, a CP hotel and the mountain that is home to the hot springs that were the reason for Canada's first national park. The first was a 30 second exposure with a 50mm, and the second was a ten minute (about, I didn't have a watch) with a 28mm. Both were at f2.8.
You may note the weird refraction of the hotel lights, which I can't figure out.

Here's my first actually good pic on my MRR, of my prized Atlas C-424s.

I'll edit a link to the railroadforums post in a sec.
Edit: Sorry that the bloody photo won't enlarge, sorry about that... here's a link the the full-sized one. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b274/trainboysd40/C-424sonRedrocktrestle.jpg
Okay, forget the railroadforums post, here are the pics...
    A couple at Banff: http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b274/trainboysd40/img037.jpg

    http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b274/trainboysd40/img031.jpg
And a few at the grade crossing at the east end of Field, just at the start of the Big Hill. Needed more telephoto to accentuate the grade. The train with the autoracks went up the grade, stalled, and came back down, giving me the opprotunity to take multiple pics of it from different angles!
