Alec that is not Max thats me your talking too.. Look at the names please. The reason I am thinking of going toward the DM&E is because they are much more generous on there days off. The CN has just cut all there employees days off to 2 instead of 3. They have also been working the engineers on a 6 day week and each has worked a 12 and a tow day. So you might want to look at what each has to offer before making accusations. Plus the CN is paying all most all there engineers at 29 dollars an hour or so. The DM&E is working there groups for 5 days and three days off. The Guys on the coal hauling trains will be paided roughly 25 to 26 dollars. So there are some ups and downs. CN may be higher pay but you need to look how hard they work you and what the off days are. My dad has been working 12 hour days and usually dies on the line 100 miles away from home and then he won't be home till late at night. Then he's home 2 days and then does it again. CN is not the most generous railroad. Plus this would be hard on the wife and kids when you have them.

CN also, in general, isnt very generous to employee's. I was a at a banquet for the NSSR and they were giving a away a CN jacket and a CN employee goes "What the hell, that guy gets a jacket and hes a railfan, but we work for CN and they dont even give us anything...."(CN that is)
DM&E would be more catered towards employee's.

DM&E works there men 6 and 3 not 5 and 3. But there are better hours.

And it all depends on what job your working on. If your working the transfer by me, CN is the best option. If your a conductor down here you get a company truck to drive to different yards. DM&E may be more generous, but you can ask Will why he didnt want to work for them. We had a conversation about the DM&E because thats where i want to work. Its not a smart decision, but i want to get some experience before i move on. Money DOES matter, if your bringing in more money you would be surprised by what your brain is willing to do.

well didn't see much yesterday the only interesting things were a GCFX SD40-2 # 3066 (FURX colors) and a brand new coal car train. Their markings are HLMX and were built probaly 11/05. I didn't get to see the train up close but did see it at a crossing at night. Whats worse is didn't get the numbers of the 2 engines oh well. I got 1 week left before spring break and masters week (golf tournament). I got pratice tickets for Monday April 3rd but in the train world the NS masters train and CSX come (NS Sat. or Sun. CSX Monday) hopefully NS brings something special like in 2003 NS brought IC 100 with them and 3 coaches.

Money aint that special there bud.

You WONT always work the same job Alec. You will work all over. I MYSELF would probably work either CN or BNSF if I had to choose a Class 1. DM&E, or Northshore Mining would also be nice.

I know what you mean Max. Sunny and warm and bright and the perfect day togo and look at that bridge. But someone has to be sick. Maybe next weekend . Hows the boat idea coming anyway?

Did you here that the grand canyon railway is being sold to someone else. I thought this quite interesting. The current owners are looking for someone that will take care of it. There being quite picky about it which is good.

Not all class ones are that bad. See the thing is they offer you variety. I could be in the yard and get two assigned days off a aweek. On the road u dont get any days off, but make much more.. and can still take days off. Im on the extra board and have not worked since friday. And i still get a monthly rate.. if u make more u make more if u make less u still get the minimum rate. With smaller railroads u also dont have as good of benefits. I think the DME and ICE just got a union set-up not to long ago. TCW is non-union i think. So you wont get as good of benefits. It is all a trade off.. by the time i have a family i will be able to hold day or afternoons in the yard.. work road switchers... what ever and still have a life out-side the railroad.

And i dont know ANYONE that works for CN right? I only know a good batch of atleast 10 guys that i DO talk to. Not just about railroad stuff either, and i am VERY good friends with the trainmaster down here so lets not say that "oh he knows cuz his dad works there". Max, its obvious that you wont stay in the same spot, but if you have enough seniority you can practicly hold a job as long as you keep bidding it. An engineer down here , Ed Patten, old rock island guy, has held the transfer job for YEARS. And money is a big deal if you want a nice house, nice cars, nice stuff. Im not debating that working for the DM&E wouldnt be fun. Not at all, im saying the SMARTER option. I even said myself that i wouldnt mind working for them , but money speaks and you'll all realise that some day.

Now on to other stuff.

Got another pic on railpics, just search BNSF 5025 and look for mine. I can get a couple more on there if i crop better also. Transfer had the WC 6905(SD40-3) and WC 6004(SD40-2). Caught the Minnesota Commercial and ill be seeing a coal load at 12:30. Hope you guys see the bridge before its done. What bridge is it anywho?
