Trackside with Erik and Mike, Vol. 43: November 21, 2005

  • # 2 is rather ni9ce, but theres alot of photos out there like it. #1 Got my vote. Looks hazy enough to be interesting. also looks like the typical downtown Detroit look to me.

    Happy thanksgiving yall.

  • I voted for #1 as it was a different kind of shot. While some have felt the picture was too busy or didn't like all the cars I felt that helped make the shot. Here was the train driving forward, while down below were all these cars trying to get through the fog to work.

I did wi***he 2nd engine(red) was the lead engine as the red color against the foggy background would have been more dramatic - But overall a great photo!!!!
  • Boy,you guys don't make it easy! They are both great shots.I voted for #1,however.I liked the mood created by the fog. The train crossing the bridge with the background shrouded in fog made a pleasing photo out of what on a sunny day would have been an ordinary shot of a train crossing over a highway.
#2 was also very good, with the coal train passing the grain silos. It may be the Grinch showing up in me, but I tend to deduct a point or two for any UP shot(except for 844 or 3985).Photo 1 would have won anyway.
Ride Amtrak. Cats Rule, Dogs Drool.
  • It's photo #1 for me. The overall mood is what did it. The sun playing on the fog is quite colorful.

  • I like photo #1,Artistically it's great the Engine in the fog.
Photo#2 seems to be more powerfull makes me want to lookat it again.
Great work as always.I enjoy seeing your photos and try to get out and do more myself.
    Happy Thankgiving.

    Folks:
Truthfully I liked both foto's... But voted for the Uncle Pete shot. Normally I'm not a fan of the Armour Yaller line because of their "greedyness"... But like the composition and timeliness... After all it is "FALL", even down here in The Heart of Dixie. Fog on number one was OK but it's another SD who's lost it's identity thanks to CN corporates'
"Paint it anything and put the wet noodle on it" policy etc.
Anywho: Keep up the good work guys. Try to weigh in whenever I have time... Like today when no-one's in the newsroom on this Pre-Holiday. Thanx

  • No. 1!!
  • Foto #1. Reminds me of the old saying, "F8 and be there". Never be without a camera. (And film)
  • I think that photo number 2 of the Union Pacific engine was pretty good ( Union Pacific is my favorite railway), and for that you get my vote. The only reason that number 1 did not get my vote was because number 2 was a Union Pacific engine. Believe it or not, I've never seen a locomotive go over a road. I hope that you dont stop comming out with such brilliant photography.
  • I voted for two, because the area I'm from is very much like the photo. It's a beautiful shot, And I enjoyed looking at it. Nothing against CN, but I liked number two.

  • Voted for #1,the loco emerging from the trees in the fog on the bridge, so much to
see and discover in that photo. Almost went with #2 beins as how I work at a grain elevator, as a matter of fact the photo of that UP looks like it was taken where I work
but it was'nt I work in Lamar MO
  • Eric & Mike,

You know guys, it just keeps getting harder and harder to choose a winner![:O] This is like a clash of Titans or the gunfight at the OK Corral! Sadly though, like any contest, there is a winner and a loser.[:(]
Your choices, this time around were most creative and entertaining![^]
I gotta tell you though, I just loved photo #1 [:)][:D][:P][bow]
Very nice, most creative, a truly artisic pic worthy of a cover shot on Trains mag!
I tip my hat to you both on your efforts this time and to whomever took photo #1 [^]
  • I voted for #1 also as it was seemed to me to be very sureal in nature. As said by someone else it seemd to be one of those shots that just happened and the photographer was fortunate to be there with the right camera to grab it

  • Both shots are good, but the morning mist did it for me in this contest. Photo 2 is nice but didn't grab me like no. 1.
  • Well, it's 2;36pm, Friday the 25th. Having just read all the comments on the latest photos I'll put in my 2 cents worth. No nit-picking about either photo, each one a great shot for its time and place. To me it just boils down to the fact that you like one slightly more than the other. I found no fault with either one, it's just a judgment call
for each voter. #1 got my vote this time. Thanks, Erik & Mike, keep up the good work.
Railroading is supposed to be fun - Railroading IS fun - don't forget it.
