Conrail SD38's

I know Penn Central bought the SD38's for hump duty in yards. After a few years with Conrail most were mated to a slug (MT-6). But there were a few that were not. Does anyone know if they were left that way specifically? Did any make it out on the road in use(not dead in tow)?
