Flaming NS diesels make me glad I'm a CSX fan. It seems as if ex-Conrail's are giving them trouble[?]...I guess CSX got the better loco's, then. I've seen one, count it, one photo of a flaming CSX unit, and I cannot count the number of NS units I've seen flaming.

I suppose you're right. But I tend to see mostly Southern Pacific and Conrails flame it out than NS Locos themselves. Preferibly, you are right about NS smoking more often than CSX though---lol!

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I just ran across this and thought I'd chime in.

The reason some GE's smoke so much and occasionally show stack flames is because of their exhaust manifold design. At idle, raw fuel in the exhaust tends to settle out and collect in the manifold.

When the loco gets notched up, especially under load, after idling for a while, the increased heat vaporizes and may ignite that raw fuel. That's why you usually see it when the loco is accelerating it's train.

It has nothing to do with fuel lines leaking or turbo failures, although those events can certainly also cause smoke and/or flames.
