    Actually no. They are SD40-2M's not SDP40-2's. They have the body, but the engine is what it truly is.
    Just like a lot of your beloved AC6000CW's arent real either, beecause they are derated.

  • First would be the USRA Light locomotives, especially the 4-8-2's and 2-8-2's. Then some articulateds.

    Next, I would call a tie for EMD E and F series diesels, and GP 7's and 9's.

    While I respect your opinion, this forum is not about class, it is about opinions. Sure, an SD45 may not be as "classy" as a Pioneer Zypher, but it does show the other side of railroading, freight railroading, the gritty work, and a lot of people like that. I do

    I like trucks, thats what I drive. But given the choice between the '72 Ford pickup or a '72 Ferrari Daytona California Spyder, if your asking me what would I prefer picking up Paris Hilton in before he hit dinner, dancing, then a little video making, Well uh...kinda a no brainer, do you want to look like a Cary Grant or Gomer Pyle[:p]

    Same with trains, while an DASH or an SD does its job well, it certainly lacks the "cool" factor.

    Think about it, would Magnum P.I. look "cool" cruising thru Hawaii in a Chevy stakebed?

    How fun would Maimi Vice have been with a Toyota Pickup?

    Burt Reynold's with Sally Fields trying to outrun Buford T. Justice in a Panelvan Delivery Truck ?

    Bo and Duke in a Cement Mixer?

    Cool is an Design Attitude = Zephyrs, M-10000, the City of Los Angeles, the Haiwatha, the Cornelius Vanderbuilt, The 20th Century Limiteds, the Aerotrain, E-units, F-units, FA'1's, PA-1's, Centipedes, and Little Joes all have a Coolness to them that the "Toolboxes on Wheels" of today lack in spades!

  • Hmmmm......Coolest, best looking... Nothing about the most built or best pulling or anything other than pure cosmetics...... I had to cast my vote for "other" since there was no pick for Alco PA -1. Imagine my disappintment at seeing only one other post that felt the same as me.....

  • No question. Lionel's Western Marylands Lionmaster Challenger..The detail and paint scheme (red& black) is very sharp. You spot it right away on any layout. The engine itself is great on the details and operation!!

    Well, the best car ever made is a 1965 Chevy Corvette Stingray convertible, Red with a white interior, as well as the original 4 speed. Trains though, the ALCos were the best looking, and best sounding diesels around. The best steam would either be the NYC Hudsons, the N&W J, the PRR T1, the Reading T1, and the PRR Mountains.

  • I would narrow it down even further, SD40-2T Snoot nose. That long low nose, set back cab, and square back end with big radiator intakes, they always reminded me of a muscular sportscar like a vette or even some of the Mustangs (fastback). I'm also quiet impressed with the 90MAC's, they're just big and powerful looking.
    Steam, i'd have to go with the UP / DRGW Challenger's. Clean lines, good symetry (sorry Alleghaney fans) powerful and fast looking.
    Electric, tossup between little Joes and GG1's, I don't really like any other electrics, they're just boxes.

  • I voted other. The Milwaukee road got a set of units called the Box cabs. They were sets of 4, 3, and 2 electric locomotives. All four could rack out 15000 horse power and have a starting tractive effort of over 300,000 per square inch! The brutes of all railroads!!! They were, in my eyes, the best locos to ever be built.
