Lionel Transformers

  • I have a 55 year old "ZW" Lionel transformer. It sat in hot attics and garages for 45 years. It appears to have reduced power to operate my engines. Do transformers need renewing/overhaul to be peaked up?

  • Could very well have the materials partly broken down due to the long inactivity.

You could repost the question on the Classic Toy Trains board but if it wer me, I'd just get a new transformer. Unless you have a huge layout a new transformer would probably cost less than the old one and some collector might be interested in the old one.

  • The ZW's are great trasnsformers. I use two of them on my layouts. It may just need a good tune-up and cleaning.

Why not take it to your local Lionel Dealer - repair center and have it looked at.
