types of modern diesel locomotives

ok, i'm relatively new at being able to identify the type of a diesel locomotive by merely looking at it. but i'm still somewhat confused as to the finer detail. i mean, i can tell a General Purpose Diesel from a Special Duty diesel. but i can't tell an SD-90 from a Dash 9. and is there a difference between a dash 8 and a dash 9? i've been considering all diesels with the wider noses to be dash 9's or dash 8's until i found out the SD-90 has the same nose design. i'm way confused
my question is this, is there a site in existance that describes the specific characteristics of these types of diesel locomotives? i've been searching, but i cant find any.

You are going to have to buy a book called a Diesel Spotter's Guide.
For now, just look at these pictures of whatever model you are interested in.

Kalmbach's "Field Guide to Modern Diesel Locomotives" (is the title correct?) is quite helpful. You can probably order a copy through this website.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
