I have a question about the old NYC west side line on the hudson river, now CSX freight only. I was told there was going to be passenger service restored al the way to albany. Looks like a passenger station is being built in Congers NY. Does anyone know anything about this or where to find info about this project. Joe A.

Amtrak started using the West Side line in Manhattan on April 7th, 1991.
You are asking about the West Shore line from Albany to New Jersey.
I don't think Amtrak has the money for expanded service right now.
Could this be a Metro-North project ?

yes it must be the west shore line im asking about. Will try to find out if its a Metro north project. Hard to find info about this project though.

Found a EIS being done by NJ Transit for passenger service to West Nyack then possibly to Congers and Haverstraw NY. Who would have thought it would be NJ transit. Anyone with additional info would be appreaciated. Joe A

NJ Transit using the old West Shore actually makes a lot of sense. Metro North would have to equip their trains with pontoons to get to it.[(-D][:-,]

(Actually not theoretically true assuming M-N can't use Penn, but the circuitous route from GCT over to the west side connector, down to Penn, over to Secaucus, and up to the West Shore sounds like something Amtrak would only do in Texas)[}:)][}:)][}:)]

Metro-north are running trains on the west side of the river between Suffern and Port Jervis. NJT handles them from Suffern southwards.

Anything on the West Shore would probably be a joint NJ Transit/Metro North operation, not unlike the service on the Erie main to Suffern and Port Jervis and the Pascack Valley line to Spring Valley. Metro North contributes locomotives and cars to the NJ Transit pool out of Hoboken. I assume that service would be out of Hoboken but I don't know how the connection would be made.

CSSHEGWISCH looks like you are right , its a joint NJT and MN operation. Still in the study phase though. There is even talk of getting the trains to Penn station somehow. Looks like lots of money spent in the study phase is just a prelude to how much the project will cost though. Joe A.

Hi there!

I live in Congers, NY. The only train station here is on the corner of Lake Rd and Burnside Ave. If they are in the process of planning a new trainstation, I do not know about it. The railroad line is freight, as you mentioned. Anyway, as far as the train station they are restoring, it's not being used as an actual train station. The town of Clarkstown bought the abandoned land & train station for $1 million two years ago. They just finished the restoration and have opening the area as a park. The renovated train station is going to act as a community center and security point with 8 police officers (who are paid $95,000/year after 5 years.)
