  • Bring the SP and the WP back to the West coast and rekindle their rivalry. I'm sick of the UPs same old yellow paint scheme everywhere all the time. No variety. Every time you hear the train coming, you know exactly what it’s going to consist of; two SD70s two SD40s and about 50 TTX cars.
  • from bob t. good grief ! people are lamenting the passing of the B. N. ( just never got used to B. N. green.) i say bring back the burlington rout. yes! the good old C.B.& Q. ! love those zyphers !
  • Conrail definately. 6 years later and sorry I'm still not digging the Norfolk Southern.
  • Milwaukee Road - With a management team that knew how to run a railroad. Shoey
  • SOUTHERN PACIFIC hands down my altime favorite

But think about this if this had happen. PRR had taking in the LV,N&W,Wabash,NKP,and the NH The NYC had got the B&O,C&O,WM,RDG,CNJ,PL&E,and EL. What would things be like to day?[?][?][?]

I think basically it would be not unlike where we are today, after unscrambling the Conrail egg between NS & CSX-but I think we would have saved a LOT of grief and expense in between. A "two big system" northeast would have been healthier than the "one colossal and everybody else" situation that developed after the PC merger. Providied that the two systems were able to shed redundant trackage the way Conrail was, we could have had a couple of healthy systems that would have been merged off a decade or so earlier that what happened (remember NS & CSX looked at Conrail in the 80's but one big argument for not doing it was that CR was a monopoly in it's territory and no one could think of a way to balance out one RR having CR and another not).

If I remember right someone's column in TRAINS not too long ago (Ed King? Don Phillips?) said that, when the C&O/B&O merger was being comtemplated, NYC wanted in. That was felt by C&O too be too much for them to swallow and too much for the ICC to allow at once. (Both B&O and NYC would need some substantial investments, too, although NYC was working on geting it's finances in better order.) At the same time N&W was planning it's breakout from the coal fields by acquiring WAB and NKP. The proposal from C&O was to let them merge with B&O and, at the same time, let N&W do it's thing. Then, when things had settled down and the new systems were running fine, PRR would merge with N&W and NYC with C&O/B&O. Keeping in mind that Pennsy had an interest in LV for some time, that would've been close to what you suggested. DL&W, ERIE and NH would've had to be fit in somewhere or left to merge themselves in to a third line. (Given that a lot of branch lines were becoming more of a burden than traffic generators at this time, a spare system like that may actually have done quite well.)

Phased mergers like those could have avoided the meltdowns we've been experiencing every time there is another expansion of systems. And it could have saved a few billions in bankruptcies and tax dollars!

  • I would love to see the SJLC return. Originally known as the Portland & Ogensburg VT Division (1871-1880), it bcame the St. Johnsbury & Lake Champlain (1880-1948), St. Johnsbury & Lamoille County (1948-1974), Lamoille County (1973-74), St. Johnsbury & Lake Champlain (1974-1976), Vermont Northern (1976-1977), Lamoille Valley (1978-1995), and the Twin States (1985-1999). The 120 mile railroad ran from Luneburg, VT to Maquam, VT. Sadly, the old Covered Bridge Road that I fell in love with after reading Kalmbach's Railroads You Can Model (edited by Mike Schafer, pages 58-65 in the 3rd Edition) is being turned into a recreational trail.
  • Erie Lackawanna, Reading, Penn Central, and of course the grand daddy of em all The PRR! OPPPS I alomst forgot the Lehigh Valley.
Heck I'd even settle for the old Conrail. Many's a morning I'd hop a short consist to school. Saved the bus fare mom gave me and buy cigs or on Fridays buy beer for the weekend !!! Man I miss those days !
