  • NORTH OF CASS,AT DURBIN IS A SMALL MUSEUM WHICH GIVES RIDES ON A HEISLER OR CLIMAX. AT ELKINS THERE MIGHT BE ANOTHER TOURIST RAILROAD.LAST WEEK I STAYED AT WHITTAKER CAMPGROUND A MILE WEST OF CASS,LOWEST LEVEL SITES ARE NEXT TO THE TRACKS. ALCO MRS1 IS ALSO AT CASS. BROKEN KEYBOARD SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS.
  • Don't know how much time you have.

In Huntington you can see a lot of the CSX shops from public property. Don't know how tight your schedule is but WV route 61 parallels CSX (C&O) and you can pick it up off I-64 in Charleston. Might even see the Cardinal depending upon time of day. A bit diffcult to find but near Oak Hill is Thurmond and just north of Oak Hill is the New River Gorge Bridge on US 19. You can drive down to the New River from the north side as the roads are one way.

  • Might want to wear clothes that are sturdy. I rode the Cass as a child and recall the hard working shay.

Also think about some Bonnie for ears. Those grades you are going to ride up and down are just steep enough in some areas to make you think twice about walking.

Cass is a wonderful place. I hope it is the same as it was 20 years ago.
  • we just visited cass on the 5 th of august. we had a hiesler #6 pushing us to whittaker station. the shay's were not running that day. On Saturday's you can see where they repair the steam engines. It was a great ride Please bring ear plugs as the engine is very loud.

I think its called the Cass Scenic Railway. I went on it a few years and it was pretty cool. I think they were running a shay at that time. Its a lot of switchbacks up the side of a mountain.
  • I went there back in May, and it was a fun trip, I went on and rode the Spruce Trip which is 5 hours long. My dad and I were going to ride the train to Bald Knob the next day, but decided to take a trip to Durbin to ride the "Durbin Rocket" which is a 2 truck climax steam locomotive. There is a hiesler there, but in pieces. Both trips were great and look forward to my next visit.
