Who holds the copyright to the song "Wabash Cannonball"?

I'm writing a story (war story, not RR story, btw) in which a character sings "Wabash Cannonball" and I'd like to quote some of the lyrics. Thing is, who holds the copyright to this tune I can write and ask permission to quote from?
Thanks!

It may be in the public domain by now but you may wi***o contact Broadcast Music, Inc (BMI) or ASCAP as these firms handle royalty payments for radio and other air play.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
