I'm not sure if there is a bad place for photos.
In Barstow, the BNSF has a big yard there. Trains come and go in all four directions. To the northwest the traffic heads to and from Tehachapi, the southwest over Cajon Pass; Sna Bernardino and Los Angeles, northeast the UP travels on their own tracks between Daggett and Salt Lake City and the southeast BNSF's traffic towards Needles and the Seligman Sub.
In Tehachapi, the BNSF has trackage rights between East Mojave and Kern Junction (Bakersfield). IMO just about anywhere is a good spot for photography.
At summit, if on the Tehachapi area there is a resturant across the street from there. If you are talking about Summit in Cajon Pass, I'm not sure.
Regards Gary
