Hello I have recently recieved a JEP train and was wondering if there was anyone on here that could help me out on finding any info on it ? Like what scale it is how old it is and if it have any value . Here is a brief description of the train . first off it is just the engine not the complete train . It is about 14 inches long and quite heavy I am gonna guess and say 3-4 pounds maybe more . it has the box and several with it . all can be seen in the pictures . As far as condition it is in pretty good shape the one clear light on the front moves around but it is there and will come back out in its proper spot. there are 3 of the 4 bumpers broke off but there are replacment ones in a small bag in the bottom of the box . there are the letters SNCF and CC7001 on both sides of the engine . the windows appear to be dirty but there are no cracks . the things on top of the engine that have springs on them and go up and dowm (I would like to know what there called ) look to be in great shape and have no rust or pitting on the chrome. Well that is all I can think of to say about it right now but if you have any questions or want to get ahold of me my email address is
dans3kgt@aol.com
thanks
and have a nice day

Well lets start with the obvious. The things on top are called pantographs and your engine is a French electric. The pantographs are raised to make contact with the wire overhead that supplies the electricity to run the engine. That was the easy part. Never heard of JEP but I would suspect it is a European supplier since the engine is French. You might want to do an internet search for JEP and see what happens. I suspect it is O scale or maybe S scale but I doubt it based on the length. It appears to be in very good condition and might be worth some money due to its rarity in the US. I agree that I would post this on the O scale forum or the toy train forum for a more knowledgable answer.

JEP = Jouets deParis - a French firm that manufactured toy trains from just after the turn of the last century up through the 1960's. Your engine is an O gauge die cast JEP "Mistral " manufactured ca. 1960. It was essentially the swan song of that particular company. The electric outline was favored in the post WWII period and, according to Pierce Carlson (Toy Trains, A History) some of the best models of this type were made in France.
The company itself was originally named S.I.F. (La Societe Industrielle de Ferblanterie) which started business to meet the demand for lower priced trains in France. The company, like so many others around the world, quickly adopted the German section tin-track system and the idea of a steadily growing railway empire. In the post WWII period JEP, like their U.S. counterparts saw train sales peak in the mid 1950's and then begin to decline. They switched to die-casting in the post WWII period and your engine and the P.L.M 2-8-2 with two motors were their most popular engines.
As sales fell JEP tried to market an S gauge system which failed as did an effort to enter the HO market. By 1965 JEP was history.

Well, you are in luck! We have just formed a Yahoo Group that focuses on JEP trains. Do take a look if JEP is your interest:
