decals

  • hello i am a scratch build model boat builder. been printing my own decals (inkjet, micromart decal, spray clear laq) for a few years. recently i have not been able to apply the decals. when I put them into water the edges curl as if the film is too thick. have tried lighter spraying, etc. Tried putting the decal without the spray and worked fine but as you all know the ink comes off in the water. any ideas? thanks

  • I've found that with the DIY / self-print decals you need to allow the freshly printed decal sheet to dry overnight before applying any of the sealant.  The next day, spray a very light coat of the recommended clear sealant over the decals and let that dry as well.  The next day, spray another light coat.  This will prevent the clear sealant from messing up the decals (which has happened to me more times than I'd like to admit), and keeps the added thickness to a minimum.

Unfortunately, I've found that all of the DIY / self-print decal systems I've used have films are pretty thick and can curl on you.  I'd recommend using Micro Sol / Micro Set with the decals, as that is where I've seen the most success.
