  • I love it when a pair of EMD's start to Throttle up[:P]!

  • I have to agree, throttling up's the best!

  • The sound of Dynamic Braking would be my second choice.[8D]
COTTON BELT: Runs like a Blue Streak!
  • Accelerating.
  • You should hvae two polls, one for EMD and one for GE.
  • Can't beat the sound of EMD 567s accelerating a passenger train out of the station[:)].
Ride Amtrak. Cats Rule, Dogs Drool.
  • GE's have no sound when they Throttle up....They just Pretend!
  • I love and I mean LOVE the sound of EMD's prime movers throttling up!!!!! I espually love the sound of the 20cyl 710GB in the SD80MAC reving up. However, the EMD 16V265H prime mover sounds phenomenal reving up by itself (just the engine w/o the loco). It's a beast. !!!!

I would have to say I second I love the sound of the air brakes. I don't know why but I just do. I wish I had air brakes on my truck instead of hydraulic brakes.
LORD HELP US ALL TO BE ORIGINAL AND NOT CRISPY!!! please? Sarah J.M. Warner conductor CSX
  • Looks like acceleration is running away with the poll.

It is also my favorite of the sounds listed.
Second would be the clash of the cars being pulled from a complete stop.
  • Seems you're right. Acceleration is definitely the winner. Have to admit, I'm not the least bit surprised by this. My favorite places to railfan are always in hill country, for example, Donner pass east of Truckee, along the river. The westbounds are in run 8, four or five, maybe six units on the point, slugging it out with the grade for all they're worth. The best possible lash-up is all EMD. To me, the 2-stroke EMD's are the prettiest sounding engine in the world, and it doesn't matter which model! It's not exactly acceleration, but in terms of the sound it's almost the same. Anyway, great poll! This one is fun! J.D. Nomad
  • I'm more of an idling guy myself.

Nothing beats 2 or 3 (or more) locos on the head end idling away just getting ready to unleash.

They just sit there and wait, it sounds like they're alive.
  • I would say accelerating, especially with ALCO's.
