  • Are the former D&H sharks still in one piece or have they joined the ranks of the decesed and extinct?

  • Type in Baldwin sharknose in Google. I recently found a sight that showed D&H sharks (great color pics). Site also shows step by step airbrush painting for a D&H.
A PRR (I was hurt) Model power shark was used for starts .
BP20 and RF15 (On the Pennsy) were beautiful engines. I say better looking than Alco PA's by far. Eye of the beholder.

I returned favor by obtaining a MP D&H shark plus two other factory paint models and attennied, laddered, horned, painted, detailed, and decaled them to a beautiful Tuscan red PRR lashup.
  • There might be a thread about them on the www.railroad.net forum .Last I heard they are still in one piece, but the owner doesn't want them photographed. Last time I saw them was back in 1980 on the Michigan Northern. Joe G.
  • Last time I saw one was many years ago at an engine rebuilder in St. Paul Minnesota. One of them had a scored crankshaft and the entire engine was out of the cab. I'm not sure it was ever rebuilt. It had been in service on one of the iron range railroads after leaving the D&H. I was amazed at the room in the cab of the engine. You could have held a dinner party in there.
  • Repower them with EMD 2000 HP 645 engines and you get two good locomotives.
Ride Amtrak. Cats Rule, Dogs Drool.
  • While repowering Baldwins with EMD engines is an old practice (EJ&E, C&NW, MKT, among others), I'm not sure that it worked that well unless you also replaced the Westinghouse main generator. The generator was designed to work with the De La Vergne engine which maxed out at 625 RPM, while most EMD engines topped out at about 1000-1100 RPM. EJ&E managed to get the repowered centercabs to work reasonably well, but I wonder if operating expenses were reduced enough to justify the expense.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
