Alfred Perlman and Fred Gurley

  • Did New York Central's Alfred Perlman and Santa Fe's Fred Gurley hated steam locomotives. Were they anti-steam .

  • NO!    And the number of well-preserved AT&SF Locomotives proves this.   But what about the NYC and Perlman?   Economics:  The AT&SF could afford to donate steam for preservation and didn't need every last penny from scrap steel sales.   The NYC in its belated dieslization program did not have that prosporous luxury.  In both case, though, dieselizaion was based on economics, not emotion.

    Hatred is a word that should be used to describe the actions of the Boston Bomber, not railroad managers trying to do their best for their stockholders, workers, and customers.

  • Santa Fe realized from the start that they needed diesels - if nothing else, because it would save on them having to haul water to remote desert locations to replenish the steam engine's water supply. NYC seemed a little more unsure, IIRC their first E-7 passenger diesels arrived virtually the same time (early 1945) as their new 4-8-4 Niagara passenger steam engines.
