J Class 611

  • Hey everyone. Ever since I was born I have been raised to be a train lover. The trains rhythm was the same as my heart. One of my favorite engines was the 611. She was so beautiful. She still can be too. I really hope everyone can donate to help bring her back. If you need the link here it is:

  • All it will take is money and time.   The NS decided not to allow steam to run in late 1994 and the NS could do that again at any time, depending on management.  At the moment, yes they are allowing some steam to run, but for how long??

The rebuilding of the 611 will take several years unless the railroad is involved in the work. There is no doubt we would all like to see it run again.  I am sure many of us would contribute for the rebuilding just to know it will run again.

The picture below is my shot of the 611 in August of 1956 at Roanoke. Notice the tandem rods still on the 611 at that time from the main to third driver.

I certainly hope it does happen.

  • I have ridden the 630 once, but did volunteer work 3 times on it. Still more to come. I love the 630 but the 611 is something I love. My brother rode her when he was 16 days old. I however was too young, when I was born she was already gone. Even if I couldn't ride her I would chase her for sure. Just seeing her would be amazing.
  • rode NS excurssions out of alexandria in early eighties. there is nothing as thrilling as taking a child of today for a ride behind a living breathing machine like the ones of the 600 seriesCool
