Probably very effective for conning people who have no idea about how a diesel loco works. Looks like it was done on a slight downgrade.

In the video, looks like they shoved it ten meters in not more than 12 seconds from a standing start, so we could estimate the force required to overcome inertia. What would such an engine weigh-- 120 short tons? If so, and if they were on the level, then they must have been supplying at least 3000 lb of shove.

Probably quite a bit more than #3000. The reduction gear grease in a diesel loco is about the consistency of bread dough. Just overcoming that would probably require a couple of tons of shove.
My money goes on a fine touch on the throttle and independent brake by an experienced hogger - who then took it out of notch 1...
Looks to me that they "Pushed it off" must have been a stright shift,just get her rolling then pop the clutch,,,,LOL

That's an AAW – American Advertising Wonder : you are free to believe or not believe . From circles mostly misinformed I overheard following story :
Like with the original-original Coca Cola recipe that soon got some of its more intriguing ingredients banned by law in what was considered a scandalously unlawful action by some who might have known better but didn’t care , early Timken roller bearings featured such an extremely incredible zero-nullified factor of rolling non-resistance , brakes of trains had to be up-graded ! .. and speaking of grades : some locomotive when fully timken-rollerized would even take forever to slow down running up grade with throttle closed . As may be expected it was of course by some behind the curtain lobbying of the coal industry with the ICC that this sort of spook was being made unlawful before all too long .

I fell off the chair laughing.
That reminded me of a out take from Buster Keeten when he was filming the "Great Locomotive Chase"
he was standing on a street at the grade crossing. There was a discussion going on.
The "General" Locomotive was setting up to pick up some cars.
The locomotive was passing Buster K.. Buster reached up and took hold of the later railing to the cab.
Buster took 2 steps with the locomotive and Buster stopped. The Locomotive stopped also.
Then Buster Moved his hand as to push the locomotive the other way and into the siding. Away rolled the locomotive.
The whole group fell down on the ground laughing.
... and without a move in his face , I guess .
Oh , I can imagine him on that .
That film is one of my all time favorites .. or , Steamboat Billy is another - the unpretending loner never given a thought rises to heroic status on the occasion ...
