The 4449 did in 1975 going to Chicago to pick up the Freedom Train, but the normal motive power would be the GS6's or the early GS series GS2 on that route beyond Sparks east until the F units took over.  There are pictures of the MT class on that route before diesels also.   The 73" drivers probably were the reason for that power on the Overland Route to Salt Lake.   There certainly could have been some but none of the SP books that I have show any pictures of the GS4's on that route in normal service.  They did use GS2's and GS3's out of Sparks for some lesser trains and the GS4's did run north to Portland for some runs, but two GS6's were assigned to the Portland run normally.  One of the GS4 series was assigned to the Portland run and pictures exist showing it painted black with skirts still on for several years in the forties.  I am not sure how long this lasted but books do show that operation.
The 4449 is shown in Dunsmuir also but in dirty Daylight colors in the forties era so anything is possible.

For the most part, the GS4's were on the coast line, the valley line and the Sunset line.  The GS6's having smaller drivers were used in various service and pictures show them out of Sparks, but over the Hill was mostly Cab Forwards from Roseville to Sparks until the diesels took over.

In our HO world, any use of motive power for any service can be made into a story with background for the reason.   And there may have exceptions that others can find in books and pictures of that service.
