SPer Why did Union Pacific stopped running steam locomotives on the Salt Lake Route in the late 1940s
The replacement diesels passed all of the water plugs on the route. Steam on the Salt Lake route needed the water that was available treated before it could be used. The fact that steam needed so much water was the second factor since the route did not have much water availble to be treated for use with steam.
