Trackside with Erik and Mike, Vol. 10: June 21, 2004

  • No.1. For Sharpness and Dramatic low sun angle along with low camera angle. Good exposure. Car on next track adds rail interest. Also as I said before, I just getting tired of those long telephoto shots (as No.2)

  • Id say photo#2.

  • I have to go with #1. It is dramatic and is of one of my favorite roads. #2 is nice but I loathe the UP........

  • Hey Bergie,
ya know the photo editor never said anything to me, did he talk to you or say anything about it? By the way I voted for #1, good detail, and I like the ironicness of the two pre-merger peices of equipment.
  • As a professional photographer, I can say that compositionally photo #2 is the best. The contrast is better. Moreover, since neither sky has anyting of interest in it (e.g., clouds, birds, or the sun), it is best to minimalize it.
  • Both photo's are great, I just happen to like the surrounding senery with No2 beter though! Keep up the good work!
  • I liked #2. Go UP!
  • I like and voted #1. I grew up in Denver and like to see SF and BN stock. Not much of it round these parts (N.E. Tn.)( I really miss the D&RGW). I also like the way the sunset (rise?) is illuminating, and how well the optics picked up on the shades, any filtering? Shure, #2 is a long (rarely seen angle) train, but at that perspective, most detail was lost and it (accurately) depicts commerce in a mass mode (that is a good thing). The green trees and foliage simply means that springtime has hit the north!

  • This time it wasn't as hard as the previous ones. Another tough call. Liked the nice close up of the trains. Wasn't totally fazed by the two different railroads though. Liked No.2 as well as No.1. Close up details of no.1 and long shot of No.2 made it a relative tough call
"There is nothing in life that compares with running a locomotive at 80-plus mph with the windows open, the traction motors screaming, the air horns fighting the rush of incoming air to make any sound at all, automobiles on adjacent highways trying and failing to catch up with you, and the unmistakable presence of raw power. You ride with fear in the pit of your stomach knowing you do not really have control of this beast." - D.C. Battle [Trains 10/2002 issue, p74.]
  • I went with # 1. The old Santa Fe engine had me as soon as I saw it. Though I have to agree, consist shots are hard to come by these days.[8D]
  • Normally I don't vote for the "telephoto shot" simply because it fills the frame...but this time I just liked it better than photo number 2.
  • I found it interesting that # 1 won but the comments were 13 to 6 in favor of #2 including "jimitimi" who voted for #1 but discribed #2. C.U.
  • I picked #2, I just liked how it looked.
  • I can't say why,but I like #2 better.[:)]

  • I like photo number one better. I like it better because you got both trains in that photo and some reason I like the angle. But I think both photos are very good! It was a very hard decision also.
