Growling Proto 2000 E6

  • I have a Proto 2000 E6 that growls like a bear! I have cleaned and relubed everything, ran at for a few hours.....ready to rip my hair out. The growling starts at low speed and gets worse from there.

I love my other P2K's, this one is giving me fits!

  •    Does it growl with the shell off? One tiny drop of very light oil on the motor shaft is what took care of a noisy P2K PA of mine. Take apart both trucks and oil the bronze bushings on the axles and worms also. The gears get grease. Just a dab will do it. Always use plastic compatible lubes and always less then you think will do the job.

I started with nothing and still have most of it left!

It starts off very nicely at low speed, but then it starts this "rraw, raw, rraw" that gets faster as the enigine goes faster.....and I noticed a slight lurching movement when the engine is coasting....totally baffled

  •  Based on your comment about the lurching it could be split axle gears, something that plagued early run P2K's, although they generally cause a clicking or thunking sound every time the split teeth mesh with the truck gearing. It wouldn't hurt to remove the axles and examine each one closely. If there are any split axles, Athearn Blue Box gears are a direct replacement, or you can get the P2K versions from Walthers.

I don't know if the E6's were prone to this (it was more typical of the BL-2's and GP30's), but it's certainly possible.
