Union Pacific Historical Society

  • I'm going to the Southern Pacific Historical Society convention in Portland in 2011 . Is Union Pacific Historical Society is involved with the 2011 convention,or any future conventions for that matter.

  • The SP Historical & Technical Society and the UP HIstorical Society are two entirely independent groups, and each has its own conventions, magazines, etc.  I'm a member of both, and highly recommend each of them of anyone interested in the history of the two rail companies.

By the way, UPHS pretty much restricts its studies to the UP lines which pre-dated the MoPac & WP mergers of the early 1980s.

One interesting contrast in the two was the way each publicly responded (a few years ago) to the very aggressive trademark crusade conducted by UP under the then-current company leadership, and the difference is understandable.  SPH&TS had something of a "so sue us" attitude toward Omaha, while UPHS was appropriately much more diplomatic.  I'm glad that THAT lilttle stink has ended.

    Enjoy the convention!

If I ever met a train I didn't like, I can't remember when it happened!
