Question about Extra Board and Conductors

  • Working on a fictional short story about the railroads. I need to know who would be on an Extra Board? Would a Conductor be on an Extra Board if needed or was it made up of Dispatching personnel or who? What could be reasons a Conductor would be riding a train that he is not in charge of. Would a Conductor Deadhead to another line?
I will so appreciate your replies. Previously y'all have been so helpful.
    Thanks.

  • OK , you can be directed to deadhead to any point to which you are qualified to operate. If a train has a mech problem and is dead on the tracks and the crews time on duty approaches the limit as to which they can legally work, replacements have to be called in, this has happened to me both as a replacement and replaced.

Sometimes a job description had a deadhead action built in.

I'm on the Extra Board and when I mark up I go to the bottom of the list, as the jobs come up I move up on the standing until it is my turn to be assigned a job.

There are times that the board moves very fast and sometimes not. I have worked 1 day in a week and everyday. But in my case I have a guarantee which means, as long as I am available to accept work and do not refuse any jobs I will be paid for 40 hours no matter what.

    I hope this helps
