I am new to model railroading and I am hoping someone can give me some advice on a power related problem. I built a HO scale train layout with my son and took great care in assuring the wiring and installation of the track was correct. The layout is 5X9 and have 11 remote Atlas turnouts. We are using the transformer that came with the original train set (which had a small oval track). The transformer is rated at 16 VDC and 18VAC 7VA. I am using Atlas remote turnouts (total of 11) that use AC. When I activate a turnout while the train is running (DC), the voltage to the train drops significantly...almost to the point where the train stops. I verified that the wiring is correct and there are no shorts. I even isolated all the wiring to one turnout for test purposes and the performance was the same. The transformer is not supplying power to any other accessories. Is this normal or are there other suggestions for improving performance/troubleshooting.
I'm pretty sure this is normal. A small power pack cannot easily handle a train and accessories (especially those requiring pulse power all at once like a turnout) at the same time. Maybe you could purchase another power pack (Bachmann Spectrum makes an excellent one, as does MRC) and relegate the Atlas one to powering the switches.
Oh, and the Model Railroad Forums (you can use the same username; it's just a different section of the forum) would be a better place to post your modeling questions; I don't even know why this section of the forum is still here...

Thanks for the advice. I already have a MRC Tech 4 260 on order along with a second locomotive and was hoping when I hooked it up, it would accommodate the accessory demands. I wish I would have posted the question earlier and I would have saved some frustration and trouble shooting in vain but I guess that is also part of learning. Also thank you for directing me to the Model Railroad Forum section. This is my first visit but probably not my last.
