Train clubs in SOCAL?

  • Any train lovers in the SOCAL area? I just returned to CONUS from a long overseas tour and am looking for clubs or individuals in the SOCAL area that get out and go train spotting. Had a bad experience last weekend in Cajon Pass with the UP rent a cops while taking pictures from Rt 66 so I am looking for locals that know the "lay of the land".

Also have lots of pics and vids from Folkston Ga. area, Woodward Ok, and the transcon from Amarillo to Cajon Pass to share if interested.

Thanks for any info or assistance. I'm soonersailor@yahoo.com and the same name in yahoo chat so feel free to look me up.

  • Visit the Fullerton Amtrak station on a Friday or Saturday afternoon or evening.  A lot of railfans gather there and you should be able to get some realistic advice.  Ir is a bit strange to me that the UP cops hassled you since the rail right of way next to old Route 66 belongs to the BNSF.  UP has trackage rights on them but they belong to BNSF.

If you go to the BNSF website and look around you will find a link to their Citizens for Rail Security group.  If you apply and pass muster, BNSF will enroll you in CRS, and send you a card via e-mail.  Big difference from UP.
