GE OR EMD

  • I work at EMD in london canada so in my opinion gm is the best!! but its like anything there is good and bad in all makes and models 99% of the locomotives in emds order board are to be built for american railways. I support my family with my job at emd just like the guy or girl that works at ge supports his family!! lets hope there is enough work to support both companys and all its employees!!!!!!

  • You should have separated the GE AC4400 from the AC6000. The C44 is my all-time favorite. The C60 looks like a baboon's posterior rendered in steel. Ever been to the zoo? You know what I mean.

  • As a conductor I've got to say that I prefer EMD's. The cabs are MUCH quieter which really makes a difference. Radio work is a lot easier with a quiet cab as is conversation with the engineer. Traditional cabs (vs. widebodies) are nicer when switching as it is much easier for the conductor to get in and out of the cab. For road work, a wide body is the only way to go. The other problem is door seals. SD40's and other similar designs leak like a sieve as they age. When the temps drop below zero, you can be wearing a full set of Carhardts and still not be able to stay warm. The heads are made for a contortionist. Also, storage space for grips and other gear is very limited.

    AND AS FAR AS PAINTING GOES....IF IT WASNT FOR RUST...THEY MORE THEN LIKEY WOULDNT PAINT THEM AT ALL... SINCE PAINTING THEM COSTS MONEY... AND RUST WILL DESTORY IT JUST LIKE YOUR CAR IN YOUR DRIVEWAY...

    Engineers that work for RRs comment on "refinement" issues like cab vibration, which is meaningless to the RRs. The RRs want locomotives that are reliable and efficient, day in and day out, and the locomotive that does that best today is made by GE, not EMD. Best evidence of this is the SD75 vs. the Dash9; the BNSF yanked the SD75's from its highest priority intermodal trains due to reliability issues (doesn't matter if the SD75 is smoother in the cab if it won't load LOL). Meanwhile, Dash9s and Dash8s hold down those assignments with utter regularity, and the only thing that will stop the flow of Dash9s out of Erie is the advent of emission regs and their replacement with GEVOs. EMD hasn't been the market leader in over 2 decades, and they're unlikely to regain that former stature. They need to come out with a 4 cycle diesel engine in order to keep up with emission regs (even if they can squeak by Tier 2 with the 710, they probably won't make it through the NEXT round with a 2 cycle), and GM is looking to sell EMD and therefore don't quite have their hearts in it any more. Guess they know they're beat. [:D]

    GE's offer more horsepower, tractive effort, better dynamic brakes, better reliability, better fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and they cost less. They have the technological and performance edge over EMD and their units cost less than EMD, and they have the capacity to produce them faster. EMD's market leadership is ancient history - get used to it. Used to be that EMD got the lion's share of locomotive orders and GE got the "keep EMD honest" orders; now GE gets the lion's share and EMD gets the "keep GE honest" orders! [^]

He must have someone do the written test for him.....This illiterate could not work for the BNSF and run 70 MPH trains as we do...Thank God he runs back East & not out here...Alive & Well in California on the Needles Sub>

  • After a while on the R.R.,all you care about is the ride,noise level & visiability...ANY older Units such as the SD 40's and older or all dash 8 & early dash 9's are horrible...You need ear plugs,toilets are usually non-working or primative at best and the refrigerators(if there is one),may not work......As a working conductor on the BNSF Transcon Mainline out of Needles ,California...I'll take a new Dash 9 every time...I'm a former EMD fan, but not any longer...We go 70 MPH out here, so ride matters ..I guess back East , 40 MPH on old dilapidated track is fast to them...A NEW DASH 9 FOR THIS CONDUCTOR...
