What About Alco?

Lest we forget, Alco made many wonderful locomotives: The RS-3, the Century series, the FA, the FPA, and of course the PA! (All hail the PA--yes Kevin, you too).

And what about the EMD E-Unit: one of the best looking diesels in history, and with the power to back it up!

I voted for the GE DASH-9

give it a rest..... this fighting over what brand of loco is getting about as old as the ford cheve battle...

A LOCOMOTIVE IS A HUNK OF HEAVEY EQUIPMENT THAT IS DESINDED TO FUNTION IN ALL TYPES OF WEAHTER CONITIONS FOR MILE AFTER MILE AND YEAR AFTER YEAR....THEY ARE NOT DESINDED TO BE "PLEASEING TO THE EYE" OF A RAILFAN..OR ANYONE FOR THAT FACT.... EVERY LOCO HAS IT STRONG POINTS..AND ITS WEAK POINTS... .. AND BESIDES... THE ONLY ONES THAT CAN REALY SAY "THE BEST ENGIN IS...AND WHY" ARE RAILROAD EMPLYEES..AND THEIR OPPIONS ON WHAT POWER IS THE BEST WILL VERY JUST AS WIDELY AS RAILBUFFS...
AND AS FAR AS PAINTING GOES....IF IT WASNT FOR RUST...THEY MORE THEN LIKEY WOULDNT PAINT THEM AT ALL... SINCE PAINTING THEM COSTS MONEY... AND RUST WILL DESTORY IT JUST LIKE YOUR CAR IN YOUR DRIVEWAY...

The EMD 70 series should be the base for the next series of Amtrak units.They are dependable engines which can't be said about the GE Genisis locos.

I like EMD engines because they seem to work better than GE power. A friend of mind is a CN engineer. He prefers to use EMD power because it is quieter with the whisper cab. Those "garbage units" as he calls them make so much noise and rattle. He and other engineers dub them "rattle cabs".

emd used to be far ahead of ge, alco, and other rivals. this was of course back
in the distant past.

when did ge overtake emd and take the lead in production and sales? was it
because emd got complacent and just assumed it would always be the leader,
so it got sloppy with production and marketing and woke to find it was trailing?

opinions welcomed whether accurate or not.

I like all the older EMD or GE locomotives. I voted for the ever popular 40 series. But,
how about anything that just isn`t a WIDECAB?
