  • Whats the difference between the SD90MAC and the SD9043MAC?
  • Whats the fuel milage of the SD40-2 and AC4400
  • An SD90MAC is built with the 265H engine already installed and is rated at 6000 HP.

    An SD9043MAC is built with the 710G engine installed with provision for the 265H engine to be installed at a later date. It is rated at 4300 HP, making it a de facto SD75MAC.

    I can vividly recall standing as a kid on the platform of the Moose Jaw CPR station one very cold late evening in December 1949 to see EMD FP7A and F7B demonstrator units hove into view from out of a near blizzard with a westbound evaluation consist in tow. A large number of railway and townspeople turned out for the event, Moose Jaw then being a major steam locomotive change and servicing centre for the CPR. Ten years later the steamers were gone and soon after most of Moose Jaw's servicing facilities, including those for passenger trains.
    Now to my question, which is not EMD specific: What were the factors that lead to the demise of aesthetic looking diesel designs, like the EMD F's, FM C-liners and Alco FA's, in favour of functional but brute ugly designs like the SD's, AC4400's et al?

    The SD40-2 consumes about 168 gallons per hour at Notch 8 and at Idle about 6 gallons per hour. Not sure about the AC4400, though. I would assume less.
  • The rise of the much more useful road switcher design (GP7, RS2, etc) accounts for the demise of the carbody design for several reasons.

    The carbody design is extremely difficult to use in switching with its limited visibility compared to hood designs.

    Carbody designs are of bridge-girder construction with a lighter underframe and the body sides carrying part of the load. This makes routine maintenance and shop work more difficult since the body sides are load-bearing and can't be removed. A road-switcher design has a heavier underframe which carries the entire load. Maintenance and shop work are easier since the hoods can be removed if necessary for access to the engine and other items.

    The BL2 was an intermediate design with bridge-girder frame design but improved visibility. Modern cowl designs (FP45, U30CG, HR616,etc) are road-switcher designs with the heavier frame and full-width hoods. The Genesis locomotives are closer to the carbody type in design.

  • question please? now emd sd70mace are running around for last several months, what are emd building/testing in infant stages now? any engines larger than 4300 hp? i heard of a sd100mace on the drawing board 7000 hp. or what was that guy smokin? also is cat buying emd. thank you for your time here. good day!!![:)]

  • First. Why does a UP SD90MAC-H2 sound like a GP38-2?
    Second. What is it that makes an EMD sound so smooth? Meaning......It's wounderful powerfull sound? Like todays SD70MAC's

    Yes, there will be an SD70M-2. The "-2" does not mean Dash-2 standards, like the SD40-2 for example, but implies that the unit is complient to Tier II emissions. It will have a 16-cyl 710G prime mover rated @4300 HP, same as in the SD70ACe.
  • I have one. On the backs of the SD80M's and 90's, why do they have what looks like a C30-7 nose on the SD80 and a U23B nose on the back of the SD90M?
  • Those would be the sandboxes that jut out of the rear like that. I am unsure as to why exactly SD80MAC's had shorter sandboxes than those of SD90MAC's.
