Have any EMD questions? Ask right here!

  • Not that it's a feature that would be on all GP49s if they were mass-produced for other railroads, the Alaska GP49s have "L" windshields.
  • Why do Canadian SD's, GP's, and F40PH's have bells located near the cab, and American ones have bells located underneath the frame?
  • Question......even though i don't like u.p. no more,every time i see a U.P. EMD SD90MAC i always see the locomotive has a set of new traction motors ,why is this?mrlove.
  • I truely love the BNSF SD70MAC locomotive that had to get the ho scale proto type for my self to enjoy for many years to come.....the question is ,what makes this SD70MAC so powerfull that the BNSF went hogwash over it? mrlove.
  • 1........With the race for high HP diesels going on every day, why has EMD not brought back the DDA40X?? With different gears it could be ideal trans con container train loco.
Purchase/maintence costs would be lower with 1 loco to fix or buy than the 2 it replaces.

2.....Why doesn't EMD make the front hood longer on the dash "x" and SD70/90 series like the SD40-2 series do?? Wouldn't it be better "crash" protection for the crew?

Sorry for the time to answer. I was busy.

This feature is specified by Canadian roads

    I don't know...for all I know is means SD90MACs have bad traction motors![:D]

For the same reason NS has 1000 Dash 9s and UP has 1000 SD70Ms, what they want.
BN (now BNSF) has the Powder River basin, and with coal, ACs are a must (unless you are NS). Since BN was mostly EMD, SD70MACs were purchased. With BNSF, a few more were bought, but BNSF started to go to the Dash 9 and the AC4400 (later). The 70MACs work in the basin almost exclusively, but since some places burn Powder River coal here in the East, they sometimes wander here. I remember about 5 years ago when two Grinstein Green 70MACs came in for a week, and we caught them (for once)

1: Matience on the Centenials was always required, in fact, I bet it would cost more to maintain then two SD40-2s. It is clear that the horsepower race is coming to a halt until maintenence is simplified on locomotives, all of the engines introduced in the past two years have been less than 4500 HP. CSX is also derating it's AC6000 fleet. The RRs have firgured out that engines over 5000 HP are maintenence nightmares.

2: This would required more frame length, on the SD40-2, there was extra frame length, aka the "back porch". SD45-2s, 50s, 60s, 70s, etc. don't have this, therefore, the only way to extend the nose is to remove the walkway on the front altogether, which is even worse.
  • Are there any major external differences between a GP38 and a GP38-2? If so, what are they? Also, did New York Central ever roster any GP38's? Thanks!

GP38-2s have a shorter radiator grill than the GP38. NYC never had any GP38s but they did have GP35s.
  • whats mpg for gp9, sd40, sd70mace say 1 mpg?
  • Aside from the sheet metal and possibly gauge, is there any mechanical or electrical difference between an SDL39 and a GT22CW?
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
  • CSSHEGEWISCH,

Since you have specified a GT22CW, since W indicates domestic traction motors, probably D77 type in each case, that isn't a point of difference.

The frame of the export unit would be a lot lighter and without checking, I think it would be longer than the SDL39. Despite the fact that SDL39s had export design trucks, the SDL39 had GLC trucks from G16s, while the GT22CW (or at least the Argentine units which I saw most recently) had trucks of the high traction type with all the motors on the inner side of the axles. The dynamic brake package is differently laid out, since there is no room for it above the engine in the low clearance export design. The radiator arrangements are different, since GT22CW units all have the "Tunnel Motor" radiator layout with the fans under the radiator blowing through it, rather than sucking air through as in most SD and GP designs.

Electrically, they are probably very similar. Very few export units had "Dash-2" modular electrical equipment.

I hope this answers your question!

  • is emd currently trying to fix the sd80,& sd90 problems? or have they TOTALLY given up on these locos? same for ge and their big boys ac6600 series? now that sd70mace is out and about, what new engines are they planning?SD100? would that be the 7000 hp engine i heard they were testing in La Grange ? 2 sd100s could replace 3 sd70s.probably by 2010.
