The AmTrak was rerouted over the Chicago South Shore andSouth Bend tracks because of the derailment on the Nothfork and Southern near Burns Harbor In. just East of Gary In. 12/21/2007 approx 13:30hrs.

Normally there is a converted p-40 at one end.

Well the P40's have been stored with some being sold to NJT, so a couple P42's is probably all you'll see now, or a P42 and a Cabbage.
That's one heck of a derailment! I wonder what caused it. Great photos. I've seen unit 27 before on the Carl Sandburg.
A "Cabbage" is an old F40 that's had it's prime mover (motor) removed, and the interior converted to a baggage room. The cab stays intact and operates much like a cab control unit on push-pull cars. That way you don't need a loco on each end.
The term "Cabbage" comes from "Cab" and "Baggage"
Hope that answers your question!
Thank You!
I only heard of them refered to as
F-40 Cab Units.
If they are replacing the cab units with P-42 power units.
Are they adding baggage cars again?
I do not rememver seeing a baggage car in the one in C S S train
